Lil Opal is a Farmhouse style saison that launched our Barrelworks program. Aged in our terracotta amphora, this beer refreshes the palate with a soft light acidity with earthy funk undertones.

12.7 oz corked and caged, thanks Brenn79. Aroma is oaky, vanilla, almondy, white wine vinegar, lemon, minerally, lactic, light sulfur. Pours slightly hazy golden with a collapsing white head. Taste is sour (8/10) and acidic with strong vanilla barrel notes. Not all that strong in brett on any level, but it works well. Nice foamy mouthfeel that stops short of champagne levels and hovers right near the sweet spot. What a great and nuanced beer.

12.7 fl oz corked and caged bottle purchased at Plaza Liquor in Kansas City, Missouri. Batch 002. Bottled 05/09/16. The pour is a slight haze golden with a foamy one inch white head. The aroma is big oak, woody, vanilla, a slight yogurt tart, and herbal floral towards the back. Complex nose. The taste is the big woody earthy oak right away, followed by citrus tart yeast, a bit of floral Saison and finishing smooth with more of the wood. The palate is medium to heavier bodied with soft natural carbonation and a lingering wild yeast tart and oak finish. Complex, nice flavor integration.

Sampled at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014. Session 4. Pours clear gold with a foamy, white head. Light tangy citrus in the nose, some faint funk, light hay, sweat. Lightly sweet, with nice juicy lemon, light tartness, melon, a little dough. Light bodied with average carbonation. Balanced finish, with more citrus fruits, light tangy lemon and doughy wheat. Nice saison.

Quite hazy, dull tan, no head. Has a bretty, barrelly aroma, with the light brett fruitiness, and an accent of yeasty mustiness. Tart up front, with again such must, lots of brett. Ok, good sweetness but the overall flavour development is somewhat lacking. So good beer but missing something to differentiate it.

Bottle at Wtf 2. Pours a thick white head that lasts. The aroma is yeast, oak, funk, brett. Medium mouth, funky, brett, lacto, light oak dry finish, very nice.

Tap at CBC 2014. Beer in the glass golden, nice head. Sourish-moldy aroma. Starts mild, sourish, fruity like lemon, not too intense. Finish mild, less sourish, malty-grasy notes. Not bad.

Draught @ CBC 2015. Pours tiny hazy pale golden with a frothy white head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is fruity estery and tiny spicy phenolic with crackers, pears, white grapes, hay, dry soil, white pepper corns, dry wood and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, fruity and tiny spicy. Mouthfeel is sparkling, round, tiny tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is sweet and tiny sour with crackers, pears, white grapes, hay, dry soil, minerals and lemon zest. Bit too sweet and grape soda-like. Canβt say I detect much brett. Too young perhaps considering the sweetness...
