Black IPA hopped with Simcoe. Dark Times is a deceptively drinkable black IPA. Black IPA was all the rage in 2015's craft beer world and has been making a comeback this year.

Dark Times has a smooth clean malt backbone with caramel flavours and a dry mouthfeel contrasting with the fruity & piney notes from the Simcoe hops.

We've been making this beer on and off for around 5 years and it always gets a great reception. As we've been expanding our bottled beer range we thought it was time to dust it off and give the people what they've been waiting for.

The name actually comes from a speech at the start of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows. "These are dark times for the wizarding world..."

330ml bottle from the brewery, drunk at home. Light to mid reddish-brown, translucent with a thin beige head. Spicy aroma with toffee, chocolate and a bit of cheese. Odd. Bittersweet taste, a long bitter finish, some soap. It's got none of the pine or citrus notes I like in a black IPA. It's a tolerable drink bit not sure I'd rush out to buy another.

42nd floor beer share. Can. Clear dark amber beer, very large pale tah head. Palate is airy and smooth. Slightly tangy dark malts, decent malt cream and a touch of dark chocolate. Tangy spice and bitter floralness. Dry earthy finish reveals some mild esters. Tasty enough.

Can shared on Level 42 14/06/2017. Many thanks to Kenny for this one. A hazed dark mahogany brown coloured pour with a lasting light tan head. Aroma is dark malts, liquorice, plastic, low pine needle. Flavour is composed of tangy, nutty malts, jammy fruits, woody fruit. Palate is medium sweet, moderate carbonation, sticky. Little. Mouldy funk. Meh not that great.

Can at L42. It pours darkest brown with a sturdy tan head. The aroma is toasty, roasted malt, bitter - sweet, ash, coffee and a touch of red berry. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, toasty, earthy, spicy, ashy, cola, fruit cake, citrus peel and spice with a dry, leathery finish. Medium body and mdoerate carbonation. Not a huge amount to it.

Can shared in London - thanks to Kenneth. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy, beige head. The nose has some rounded toasted malts, burnt caramel, dried berries, faint vanilla. Medium sweet flavour with a little metallic note, mild roast, more dried berries, earth. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Alright balance in the finish, lightly warming, with notes of burnt pine, oily cocoa, more berry accents. Not bad.

Can courtesy of Geraint and Helen, cheers you two, consumed at Mum and Keigh’s, Kempsey, Nr Worcester, Worcestershire Friday 30th December 2016 Pours either dark brown or black with a beige head. Dark bitter toffee in the mouth, doesn’t taste like a BIPA, the hops are rather subdued, however it’s a decent beer. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3
