500ml can (Carnegie Cellars). Black with a beige head that fades fairly fast. Shyish aroma of roast, toast, caramel, licorice. Opens up much more upon a sip - coffee with some caramel, toast, firmish spiced bitterness. A bit of character, nice balance. Not bad at all.

Can from the local shop. Guinness-like colour, dark brown/black but a red tinge when held up to the light. Thin but fluffy bubbly beige gold head. Aroma is light roasty malt, bit of savoury soy sauce type thing, some caramel elements. Taste is ok, but no that pronounced. Some sweetness, and a bit of roastiness. Body is very thin, as seems to be the case with Happoshu, in my limited experience. Slightly watery too. Nothing too unpleasant, but nothing much to recommend it either. There are much nicer macro dark lagers available for not much more cash.

"Rich Black". Very dark brown, thin head, toasty, light nose. Light body. Emphasis on toast with some soy sauce character...good beer.

A red-brown beer with tan head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, bread, and caramel, leading to bitter finish.

Can from a random Japanese supermarket for 115 yen. Pours dark brown with a beige head that even stays. Aroma is nondeScript, some roasted malts and then quite generic booze and wet cardboard. Feel dusty. Taste is surprising as it feels quite full, mouth is full of roast OK, it maybe lacks depth and finishes fast but still, for happoshu, this one is pretty good. I might drink this again as for this price, it is very hard to beat.

5% Can from Yamaya I believe. This beers pours like a thin schwarzbier but has a stout-like head of tan foam. Sweet malty toffee & bitter coffee aroma. Fairly thin bodied with an unimpressive carbonation. The flavor is ok but also on the weak side: sweet, chocolate crackers and a bit of roasted coffee. For the price and availability it is a decent enough black beer. I had low expectation’s of this black happoshu but this surpassed them. It’ll do in a pinch.

przyjemny zapach palonych słodów, kawy zbożowej i śmietanki (trochę jak kawowy jogurt do picia). w kolorze głęboki brąz, ale całkowicie przejrzyste. piana mierna. w smaku dość pełne, przyjemne, z wyraźną palonością. lekki posmak kawy, śmietanki i przypalonego pieczywa.

Can: Poured a dark black with a creamy thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malts and light hops, some grass as well. Taste is strong on roasted coffee and malts, a bit watery.

Can from my local Family Mart. My first experience with a "Black" 3rd category brew. This is a mixture of happoshu (25% malt) and spirits... Ice cold. Very nice, high head (lasted forever!). Fine, tan, milkshake-like. Beer is black and somewhat shiny. Hey, it looks great! Roasty malt aroma, some cream. Grainy. Nothing wrong with the nose, but it’s faint and generic. It’s too cold. Light flavor of chocolate, grains, some roasting. Creamy. There is a bit of cardboard in there. Ok, but it is a bit too sweet, and in a candy-like way. Light roasty bitterness in the finish. Body is reasonably nice. There is nothing special about this, but it is reasonably drinkable for what it is. Probably the best 3rd category I’ve had yet. The roasted whatever they are save the day.
