This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85

Dark in the glass with a very nice beige head. The nose is floral and some kind of dark. The beer starts intense floral hopped, very nice with hints of pine and resin. In the mainpart there comes the roasted aroma, espresso, roasted bread. This mix of aroma is great. In the aftertaste there is a nice bitter note, which adds to the slightly sweet body a nice counterpart. The aftertaste is long - very floral with nice roasted aroma together with a nice moderate bitterness. And at 7.2% still highly drinkable.

22oz bomber pours with a nice dark body that supports a mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up modest yet playful juicy hops mixing with dark roasted malts and chocolate brownie. Yes! Smells great. The taste starts with dark roasted malts to some burnt malts that are blended with a modest yet nicely balanced array of citrus hops and spicy dank onion like hoppiness. This is all going so well together as some chocolate surfaces into the finish. This isn’t a huge rich Black IPA but it has plenty of flavor and hop to malty balance. Nice.

On tap at Marciero, 7.2% nice citrusy hop bouquet, med-light bodied the taste is floral, citrus & pine hoppy notes. A good beer, but I was kind of disappointed to get nothing from the dark malts. Average Black IPA, more of an IPA that happens to be black - pass.

22 oz bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Juicy hop aroma, pine, tropical fruit, and grapefruit, with a hint of roasty cocoa. Nice blend dominated in the flavor by the hops (pine, floral, grapefruit) layered on soft roasty cocoa. Really well done.

Bomber from Bine & Vine. Pours very dark brown with ruddy glints and a slight tan head. Aroma is citrus, smooth dark malt, and maybe some floral. Med body. Flavor is fruit, pine, earth, slightly chocolate malt, smooth burnt malt. And could be some citrus. The surviving non-malt flavor seems pine. Fair amount of hop. Could be a light hop burn. Pretty flavorful.

Small pour from a bottle. Pours clear black with a medium tan head and great lacing. Aroma is strong pine, dank wet leaves, perhaps a touch of roast. Medium sweet, light bitter, a lot of pine, some citrus, some malty notes, but not a lot of, well, black in this one; very light roasty notes are in there, but you have to be looking for them to notice. Medium body, Meh.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/21/2014. Pours crystal clear nearly opaque dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings aruound the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, orange zest, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big tangerine, pineapple, mango, orange zest, grapefruit, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, pineapple, mango, grapefruit, orange zest, cocoa, toast, light roast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of citrus/tropical hop flavors with light-moderate roasted malt balance; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice black IPA. All around good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

22oz bottle picked up at Country Wine & Spirits in Carlsbad
Pours clear dark brown with a medium sized beige head and some lacing. Aroma is pine resin, toasted malts and citrus. Flavors of roasted malts, caramel, fruity and burnt plastic (in a good way?)
A decent drinking BIPA
