White Stout is the ultimate beer in our "White Range". While the word "stout" has come to mean a dark beer, the original meaning was strong and true. Before the porter brewers commandeered the word to mean a stout, or strong, porter it referred to any strong beer.
We have rehabilitated and improved the genre. White Stout is a very pale, full bodied, strong beer. American columbus hops are used throughout to give massive floral and resinous character.
At a strength of 7.2% this is a true stout. Indeed, few modern stouts of any colour are true to the word for strong.

Cask at Great British Beer Festival 2012, Olympia, London. A golden coloured pour with a small white head on top. Sweet, fruity aroma. Tastes sweet, malty, fruity, slight bitterness. Decent.

Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig, 2012. It pours straw yellow, with a thin white head. The nose is sugary sweetness, tinned peach, hay and straw. The taste is tinned peach, pear, apple, alcohol and sherbet, with a lightly bitter finish. Light-medium body and fine, spritzy carbonation. Not my sort of thing at all.

Bottle from Bottle Shop at Canterbury. Hazy pale gold thick white head. Light hoppy aroma. I mean its clearly not a stout. It’s quite heavy on the alcohol. Hoppy finish. More like an IPA to be honest. As an IPA it’s fine. REasonobly hoppy. A bit like Phoenix White Monk but with more alcohol. Yes it’s a bit hot. Durham normally cover up the alcohol a bit more. But this is a good and different beer. Decent

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 4/7/2012. Deep gold in colour with a thin white head. Sweet, summer fruit aroma with a tropical kick. Fairly heavy and syrupy in the mouth, with plenty more fruit, some caramel and a dry finish. Fine.

50cl bottle from Beer City, BB 04/2014.

Bottle from ’Jacks’ Westholme Stores, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon, 19.04.12 consumed at home Fri 20.04.12 Pours light gold with lovely white head. I’m not entirely sure what a white stout is all about but regardless this is a tasty beer. Hoppier than I was expecting, in fact really quite hoppy, resin hoppiness that sits at the back of the mouth and one that only just this stays this side of being unpleasant. Some sweetness is also apparent, I like this beer but seems more IPA than Stout. A6 A4 T8 P4 Ov14 3.7

Bottle from the Durham Brewery
Golden amber...at room temperature clear straw colour...creamy haze 30 mins out of the fridge....bubbly frothy head that dissipates to thin layer....reasonable good lacing (It’s a Gold Stout !)
Aroma - Fruity golden malts..citrus fruits without citrus tang...hint of banana and gooseberries..subdued hops..yeast ester notes..some alcohol on the nose....complex
Taste - Rich fruity pale golden malts.....light honey..belgian yeast characteristics....complex...quite like a belgian golden ale to me but more viscous...fruits as aroma but less so...alcohol is particularly noticeable - seems to be around the 8.5% mark for a golden beer..however this does not distract the flavour too much...some hop bitterness in the background.....good sipper to pick out different flavour nuances (predominantly from the yeast)...unusual but good flavour from an English brewery!
Palate - soft carb...oily, creamy, slight powdery texture...medium body. Finish - creamy malts...considerably more hop and alcohol bitterness here ...warming alcohol tail..clears well off palate
Overall - Interesting, fairly complex beer, Belgian influences in there, really good aroma. I’m impressed with this beer, however the alcohol has considerable presence. I can’t help thinking it would be better at a slightly lower abv, perhaps 6.7%.
Take 2 08/02/2012....Twitter tasting event..room temp this time...better than rec. 10C...clear with flecks of yeast......picked up cake mix in the taste and got some floral notes ...still seems higher than 7.2% but the resinous texture does increase the drinkability....It’s not a stout but an ’English’ Belgian Golden Ale

On tap at Craft. Slightly hazy gold beer, little white head. Smooth semi dry palate with very mild carbonation. A little pale malt and a trace of citrus. Alcohol dryness is the dominant characteristic. Tasted more alcohol in this than the 15.0% BrewDog Jura earlier in the evening! Didn’t want to finish it and I left more than half of it.
