It is a popular myth that India Pale Ales were made stronger than regular beers in order to assist them to survive the ardours of long sea travel. Export beers were more heavily hopped, but not necessarily stronger. If you want proof, here it is, an IPA from 1914 at only 4.2%. This predates the imposition of wartime restrictions on drink supply and strength, so was a commercially available beer of the day.
Tommy has a bitterness of 60 IBUs, but this is softened by a high final gravity that gives a full-bodied sweetness to the beer that accentuates the orangey notes lent to the beer by large quantities of Kentish WGV hops, making it a big beer in terms of flavour and character rather than merely alcoholic strength or raw bitterness alone. In other words, what an authentic IPA was once really like.

Bottle from Liquid Treasures, Belper, Derbyshire, Friday, 19th February 2016 in company of Dad and Pauline, Loz, Isobel and Berry. Pours mid gold with a white rim, slight chill haze. Only english hops I understand, a little furry bitterness, prickly carbonation. Ok. A6 A4 T6 P2 Ov12 3.0

330ml bottle at the Bar, Museum of London. A clear golden body under a loose white head. Poor lacing. Leafy hops on the nose joined my earthy malts. Malt-fruity flavours of caramel, orange, and lemon followed by resinous bitterness to the finish. Medium to thin bodied. Satisfying (London 10.07.2015).

(Cask at Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak, London, 21 Apr 2015) Golden amber colour with foamy, white head. Malty, fruity nose with apricots, citrus and biscuity malt. Malty, fruity taste with notes of apricots, citrus, biscuity malt, tropical fruit and a balanced grassy bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well balanced. Quite nice.

Cask@London Drinker 2015 (Friday), Camden Centre, London - golden coloured pour with white head. Aroma and taste is citrus, grassy and toasty malty, some subdued citrus floral and herbal hop character, so so.

330ml bottle. Barely clear golden colour with average, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Minimally strawy aroma, notes of gooseberry, green, unripe fruit, honeydew melon. Taste is moderately bitter hoppy, minimally strawy, husky, some gooseberry, minimally sweet biscuity malty basis. Nothing to pollute memory with.

Cask gravity at the Wandsworth summer beer fest. Pale golden straw colour pour and lasting loose white head. Aroma is grassy, fatty, grainy, dirty citrus. Flavour is burnt grass, dirty citrus, some English yeast. Palate is dry, grainy tanin, wet grass. Big flavour but too rough.

330ml bottle from Selfridges, Trafford Park. One of two purchases I made in the entire shopping trip. Very fruity, hoppy taste with a rather off-putting sweetness not unlike a strange Laos lager I had once. Could only just manage a bottle of this.

Bottle at home, from ABM, 29/05/14. Clear golden with a well appointed off white covering that retains well. A good looker - I feel this beer has already recahed its rating climax!!! Nose is biscuit malt, stale bread, light caramel, musty tones, dull fruit, old curtain. Taste comprises pale malt, light honey, bready pangs, light caramel, floral notes. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with light bitterness. So very so sub par nonsense, mostly liberated down the sink - why waste the beer cals?
