Cask (William Jameson JDW, Sunderland) - Very dark brown in colour. Roasted and malty aroma with hints of raisins and cocoa. Roasted and slightly hoppy taste with roasted malt and plain chocolate dominating. Not bad, but not what I expect from a black IPA.

Cask at Victoria Station Spooneria, 28/03/14, JDW Spring 2014 Fest Beer #3. Hazed chestnut brown with a moderate beige swirl and edgework, not much of a looker! Nose is light tropical fruit, earthy hop, toasty, light grapefruit, hint of pine. Taste comprises less depth than the aroma, bitter orange, baking poweder, muted hops, straw, squidge of grapefruit. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close. Very mediocre for style, just scrapes in as a CDA - a poorly executed one at that - where are all these ’hops used:’ hiding ?!?

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Dark mahogany with a ring of cream head; earthy, nutty, aroma; earthy caramel taste with some brazil nuts thrown in; and a dry finish with some spice. Surprised to see this listed as a Black IPA, more a Brown Ale to me.

Cask at Isaac Wilson JDW Middlesbrough. Dark black brown colour, foam tan head and aroma of roast malt & light hop. Taste is fruity, roast malt, coffee, caramel with some underlying tangy hoppy bitterness. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, dry bitter finish. Quite drinkable Black IPA.

Cask handpull at County Hotel Spoons Ashford. Black beer dark brown edge lasting beige head. More a hoppy stout than anything else. Drinkable enough. Not too roasty not too hoppy. Decent. Not really my thing but fine

Cask @ Moon Under Water (JDW), MK. Dark brown, translucent with a quickly disappearing head. Aroma if milk chocolate and crystal malt. The floral hop is present but somewhat muted. Taste is a quiet sweetness with a lingering slightly unwelcome sour/bitter finish and aftertaste. Watery mouthfeel. Not bad but not interesting. I’m disappointed.

Cask at the Crosse keys Jdw. Toffee coloured with a fleeting head. Aroma is berry hops, alcohol and belgian yeast. Flavour is earthy pine hops, some berry. No way this is a black IPA. Lingering earthy hop. Lightish palate.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, London. Pours clear brown with a foamy tan head. The nose holds well toasted malts and nips of ripe citrus. Light-medium sweet flavor with toasted bread, hints of cocoa, pine, orange. Light bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Finishes with some dry earth, faint cocoa, toasty bread. Tasty enough beer but pretty basic. CDA lite, I would say.
