Shaun O’Sullivan has travelled to Wychwood Brewery, in Oxfordshire, to brew this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. This amber-coloured, floral beer uses a blend of malts to create an assertive malt backbone to the flavour, while the firm, distinctive American hop presence is enhanced by aggressive dry-hopping with Cascade. Medallist at the Great American Ale Festival 2013.

Cask @ The Almond Bank, Livingston [261013]
Caramel brown, clear, slight off white head
Aroma of soft toffee, touch of yeast, getting a hint of sulphur
Taste of yeast, bitter malts, some toffee, mineraly, some stone fruits under the minerals, not a fan of this
Palate - Medium body. Finish is dry and quite metallic bitter
Overall - No US in here - not keen on this at all

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Amber-red with a moderate beige head. Light caramel and grass with a light bitterness. A hint of Brakspears bitter- don’t know if this is auto-suggestion on my part due to it being brewed at Wychwood too, but as I dislike Brakspears it rather put me off this beer. Overall though it’s just pretty bland.

Cask at the Greyhound (JDW), Maidenhead. Copper coloured with a thin cream head; floral aroma; malty taste with a sweet/sour vibe; then dry and gently bitter with some lingering malts to finish. Pleasantly different.

Having been to the 21st Amendment Brewpub in San Fran I was really looking forward to this beer: sadly it didn’t live up to my expectations. Hand-pulled half-pint in the Telford Town Centre Wetherspoon’s on 16th Oct 2013. It came out a murky ruby/brown colour with an off-white head that gave heavy lacing. The aroma was poor, some hints of malty molasses and floral bits, but only just. The taste was also weak in nature, some maltiness with hardly any hop strength or depth. To be kind I’ll say I found some toffee notes and semi-sweetness throughout the tasting, finishing with a mild dry bitterness: sometimes I’m too kind! A let down.

Cask at the Beehive, JDW - Bargain Beer in Brixton. Pours perfectly clear copper with a rich, white cream head. The nose has a bit of bread, faint pine and dry caramel. Grainy brown bread in the flavor with light to medium sweetness and bitter citrus rind. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Grainy bread to finish with some earth and dirty pine. Not bad overall.

Cask at JDW Bishop Vesey; light copper pour with velvety beige head, some fruit and floral action, taste is caramel dominated with a flimsy malt backbone, hardly any hop action coming through very average.
