Brewed especially for the BxlBeerFest 2019, Mussels in Brussels is an Imperial Mussels Stout of 9% ABV featuring a complex malt bill (pale ale, special b, carapils, caramunich, melanoiden, chocolate wheat, barley flakes, oat flakes) and the addition of 8kg of fresh mussels—both meat and shells—for minerality and fullbodiedness.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to NewKen. Pours black-brown with a frothy tan head. Smooth chocolate character throughout, moderate sweetness, nice ashy roast, bitter dark chocolate, scorched earth. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation and velvety carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more bittersweet baking cocoa, earth, ashy dryness. Good stuff on the whole.

Draft @ BxlBeerFest 2019 - day 2.

Layered beige to tan head, stable, over pitch-black beer; good lace. Ureum-rich hops, roasted caramel syrup, mineral to almosts suggesting saltiness, liquorice if not really sweet. Sweetish-roasted flavour, meatroast, iron slag, ironoxide, mineral. Ashy finish, bit charcoal, and of course, again with lightly sweetish liquorice. Finish is more bitter roast/burnt, gradually releasing some (bitter) chocolate flavour. Good balance, helped by an ever so slight stout acidity. Chewy, feels well-bodied and ditto carbonated. Some alcohol evident. Pretty good strong stout! Oh, and mussels are way better in Antwerpen. I Many thanks to Louis! /I
