Bottle, from notes, fresh (from some store in Chicago, don't recall where). Glassy, amber-cherry with copper. Thin, off-white head showing moderately-low retention. Crystal malt hardness (play dough, iced tea) and fruity yeast adding spice and berry finally give way to some hops. Citrus and lightly piney, neither very lush nor twangy. Fairly clean, low alcohol. Hard-texrured, filtered, heavy crystal malt, typical bad 3F IPA character. Scratchy, dry, thin, undermalted and suffering from filtration. Some phenolic spice, piney, lightly fruity hops, some alcohol burn and sticky caramel mixing with resin on the end.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 4/2012. Pours slightly hazy deep golden/orange/amber/light copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, honeydew melon, red apple, guava, berries, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, banana, bubblegum, peppercorn, clove, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and dark/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, honeydew melon, red apple, guava, berries, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, banana, bubblegum, peppercorn, clove, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness; and banana/clove yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, honeydew melon, red apple, guava, berries, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, banana, bubblegum, peppercorn, clove, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy/sticky, fairly resinous/rindy, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of of 9.5% after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic imperial Belgian IPA. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and dark/bready malt flavors; dangerously smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV, with the mellowly bitter/spicy/drying finish. Awesome soft feel, and not aggressive for the ABV. Feels like Centennial, Amarillo, Columbus hops. Extremely juicy, vibrant, dank, and earthy hops with balanced Belgian yeast; with a nice sized dark/bready malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and outstanding spot on style example. Held up amazingly for over 7 years.

Bottle pours with a clear copper body that supports a thin light tan head. The aroma offers up Clementine, tangelo, cantaloupe and spicy bitter dank onion hops. The taste delivers pretty rich mango, Clementine, tangelo and cantaloupe juicy hoppiness pushing up against spicy dank onion like hop notes as well as some spicy Belgian yeastiness. This is solid as it’s plenty rich and balanced and good.

Rich (haha) orange and bronzed coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of super dense, rich yeast, grain, alcohol, bitter hops, resin, spice and a very pale note from the malt and the hops, but the alcohol and the belgian yeast strain stand out the most, for sure. Full-bodied; Dense malty and funky spice notes dominate with a lot of alcohol, some grain, dry herbs and a ton of pungent belgian yeast complexities show through the taste. Aftertaste shows a lot of bitterness, a very dry malty flavour, some subdued sweetness from fruit with a lot of spices coming through and a resinous and piney hop flavour near the end. Overall, a rich and very deep belgian ipa with some nice spice notes, a good deal of dry yeast complexities and some bitter piney and floral hops that make this very nice and airy. A good beer for sure, but not amazing. A good beer for the style, but not worth searching out - just because it’s got the tie-dyed cap. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Chicago (Streeterville), Illinois on 11-May-2016 for US$12,99 sampled at home in Washington on 18-October-2016 after my last run in preparation for the USMC Marathon (16,2mi) in a week and a half.
