Liefmans Goudenband is one of the most distinctive dark beers in the world. Originally called IJzerenband (Iron Band) – a reference to the iron bands around the beer barrels – the bottle gained its champagne cork when it was renamed Liefmans Goudenband (Gold Band). Made in open vats with beer of mixed fermentation, it is left to mature for four to 12 months in the cellar. Mature beer is then fortified with younger beer, so the fermentation process starts up again.

Bottle. Startled it's not rated. Cork stamped 2014. Nose is balsamic, raspberry, raspberry tea, oak, vanilla, milk chocolate. Taste is light balsamic (less than the nose would imply) chocolate, vanilla, cherry, hints of peach, hazelnut, lightly sour, caramel. It's decent.

Bottle. Bit cheesy, leather and oak, bit of dark fruit. Taste is very Belgian, light sourness, fruity, bit of sweetness, cherry, nice.

A barnyard aroma (I didn’t know the word, but it really fits), cherry fruit, oak and chocolate. Sweet and sour taste with chocolate and cherry. Long finish. Complex and delicious. Re-rate from tap: Sweet flavor with some apple sourness, pear and oak. Just a hint of metal in the aftertaste. I’ll stick to the original rating. Cask version: 2003, tasted 14th may 2005. Beer of the month in Café Morshuis Albergen. Porto, hint of cherry. Vinous, grapes, chocolate. Sweet and well rounded, low on carbon. Not without complexity. Glorious taste (7 3 8 5 16 = 3.9) Cask version 2003, tasted may 5th 2007: beer in the month in Café Morshuis Albergen. Pear drups and mustard in the aroma. Sugary sweetness challenged by an apple and milky sourness that agrees very much with this beer. Complex beer! Pear drups, mustard, wood even. A nice hopbitterness. Hint of ncherry juice. Excellent and delicious! (7 3 9 4 17 = 4.0)

Eins meiner Lieblings-Sommerbiere!
