Our Hill 88 Double IPA employs a simple but sturdy malt backbone to balance an assertive hop aroma and flavor. It is named after one of the highest spots in the Marin Headlands and in the early days we might have sought inspiration there over a beer or two. Maybe.

Can split at Bespin, thanks to Fergus, 27/06/16. Lightly hazed amber copper with a decent light beige head. Nose is caramel, biscuit, light spice, leafy hops, toasted grain, bitter orange. Taste comprises bitter orange, pine, toasted bread, caramel, bitter citrics. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in the close. Old school kind of DIPA, a touch harsh in places bur drinkable.

Can shared in London - big thanks to Fergus. Pours clear, rich gold with a frothy, off-white head. Faded piney hops in the nose, crackery pale malts, orange rind. Medium sweet flavour with strong piney and grassy bitterness, gooey orange, tangerine, more pale crackers. Medium to full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, lightly resinous, with more crackery pale malts, ripe citrus, pine, grass, husky grains. A bit faded overall. Not bad.

Can, thanks SirLimpsalot. Orange with a white head. More malt than hops in this one. Also grass and grapefruit. Medium body and bitterness.

Can. StarmoreBoss, Sheffield. Took a punt on this, not knowing how fresh it might be. No BB date on the can, either. Anyhow, it’s pale, copper coloured, with a light haze. Thin, lasting, sticky, white head. Looks ace. Aroma is rich, gluey, resinous, overripe mandarin hop, with a bread and honey, malty backbone. Taste is fruity sweet, turning full, rich, chewy bitter. More of the chewiness on the palate. Finishes long, resinous bitter.

16 fl oz can from the Beers of Europe. Pours clear golden, thin white head. Aromas are oily, resinous hops, marmalade. Taste is bitter, piney, resin. Oily texture, bitter finish, tad sticky. Nice though.

Can from Hippo Beers, Glasgow. It pours lightly hazy orange-amber with a decent white head. The nose is soft, juicy, sticky, plenty of orange, marmalade and light creaminess. The taste is rather bitter, sweet juicy citrus, bitter orange, pine, peppery spice, light caramel, resin and booze hit with a dry, bitter linger. Medium+ body and average carbonation. Pretty punchy hop juice. Works quite well. Solid.

Almost clear amber beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and smooth with decent fine carbonation. Soft creamy malts, just a trace of grain. Sweetish citrus before spicy pine that turns medium bitter in short order. Light tropical fruits and hop spice. Smooth finish. Nice balance of bitter, sweet, fruity and spicy. Only that light touch of grain is keeping this one under a 4.

Keg at Junkyard, Nottingham, Friday 16th January 2015 Pours a wonderful gold/orange with a tiny filmy rim a little hazy. Bitter sweet orange dominates, real bustling bitterness, getting better and better with each sup. Really love the strident citrussyness, lovely bitterness. Great stuff. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0

Can from Healthy Spirits. Pours light amber with a white head. Aroma is spicy with light stome fruit. Med body or better. Flavor is pretty malty, and the hop is floral/spice/fruit. No single strong floavor of hop, but the sum is pretty hoopy. Finishes malty/hoppy/bitter. Seems a little butterscotch.
