330ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours clear dark brown, thin beige head. Aromas of light smoke and fruit. Taste is more fruit than smoke. Thin, ok.

Pours a deep ruby color, clear, topped with a decently sized tan colored head. Mild smoked aroma, malty, nothing else to pick up. Taste is slightly malty, there is a presence of smoked taste but pleasantly mild. Drinkable, slightly smokey and that’s it.

(Cask at Holborn Whippet, Holborn, London, 1 Dec 2014) Ruby red colour with brief, beige head. Malty, fruity, slightly smoky nose with dried fruit, apricots, caramel and a touch of Lapsang tea. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, apricots, caramel, gentle flavours of smoke and a balanced spicy bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Interesting and tasty, with a gentle smoke character. Quite nice.

Cask at the Bridge House, Tower Bridge, 03/01/15. Dark chestnut brown with a moderate light tan swirl and edgeing. Nose is smoke, vinegar, toffee - way past its best. Taste comprises smoked malt, lighter vinegar than on the nose, toffee. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close. They shouldn’t have been selling this but as it’s their own pub the critical rating stands.

Keg at Blue Moon, Norfolk Street, Cambridge, Saturday 20th December 2014. Reddy brown colour with off-white head, smokey on nose a little sausagey, bit thin and a tad watery, bit too cold. Could have been much better with a bit more body a little more oomph. A7 A3 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1

Bottle, 4.7%. Mildly smoked aroma. Clear dark brown colour. Small tan head. The flavour is nicely smoked, also quite roasted. Good watery finish, actually. Still quite flavourful. And good.

Bottle. Pours clear dark copper brown with small off-white head. Clear aroma of malt, with notes of fruit, hops and smoke. Bitter, hoppy flavour with malty notes and rather mild smoky touches. Mild, bitter and estery aftertaste, with smoky hints in the very finish. Okay but not quite as flavourful as I had expected.

Keg at the Blue Moon, Cambridge. Translucent brown, with a little bit of head & considerable lacing. Minimal aroma: woodsmoke, chocolate malt, rosehips. Smoke dominates the taste: more tobacco than wood. A liquid cigar. Finish is a bit thin. Adnams’ foray into ’craft’ has been met with mixed results, with this (in my opinion) one of the less successful attempts. However, kudos for them raising their head above the parapet & giving new things a go.
