This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover’s delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the alcohol content are perfectly balanced for a caramel malt backbone. This is a serious beer for serious beer aficionados. Oink!

1 pint bottle. Pours nice clear amber with a small head that soon reduces into a thin lacing. Aroma is quite sweet, just as a barley-wine should have - but this time it’s accentuated with some strong hops. Some sweet honey and toffee aromas that have been poured over with herbal hops. Taste has some hop explosion on the strong caramel malt base. Imperial Indian Barleywine? A nice and very enjoyable combination and one of the top class beers.

Pink labelled 22oz bottle. I think it is from either 2009 or 2010.Aroma has a light hop character but it is mostly sweet malt. Lots of caramel, light cracker and hints of toffee. Some fruit notes of raisin and fig. Pours a slightly cloudy copper amber with some light brown noted. Thin light tan head that quickly recedes to the edges. Medium light lacing and medium small legs. Medium hop character with moderately strong bitterness. Light alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth.Overall an alright beer but the malt complexity isn?t amazing and is way too one dimensionally caramel. Definitely an American style barleywine with a lot of hop character and bitterness even after a few years. Some light oxidation is starting to show through. Flavor is fairly sweet with a lot of caramel and toffee notes with some faint cracker character. Medium light golden raisin note along with some fig and cherry. Updated for 2013 bottle: Aroma has a lot more hop character, still not dominant but more noticeable with a nice grapefruit and pine resin character. No oxidation with a nice, assertive bitterness and moderate hop favor. Pretty nice malt character with less of the fruit and honey notes. Upping my score from 3.6 to 3.8.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks kerenmk. Clear deep amber with a beige head. Aroma of stale hops, malt, caramel, a bit of cookies and some fruitiness. Sweet flavor, malty, cookie-ish, caramelly, with some fruitiness, stale hops, a light salty note and a bitter finish with some alcohol. Medium to full-bodied.

On tap at Avery. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin white head. The aroma is grassy pine needle hop. The flavour is strong bitter with a big malt liqourice palate. Nice to taste but a standard DIPA at the end of the day.

Poured from the bottle a nice medium gold with a decent head that faded quickly into a fine layer with some lacing.

The smell is of sweet carmel but some hoppiness was also present.

The taste is a good mix of malt and hops with the malt being big and bold(lots of caramel) up front and the hops takes over in the middle and dominates the finish to give it a bitterness that I liked. The alcohol is pretty well hidden but at +9%, I don't get that warming feeling that I'm used to in this style.

Overall, it's not the smoothest barleywine style ale I've tried but it's a good one that I'd buy again.

Growler from Joe Canal’s in Lawrenceville, NJ. Lightly hazy copper red color. small bubbly white head. Aroma of burnt sugar and spicy hops with a metallic twinge. Bittersweet dark caramel flavor that combines with spicy, peppery hops. I detect brown butter, Worcestershire, piney hops and grapefruit peel. Finishes dry and bitter with a burnt maltiness.
