This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover’s delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the alcohol content are perfectly balanced for a caramel malt backbone. This is a serious beer for serious beer aficionados. Oink!

I first tried this beer on tap at Kamikaze on a sweltering July night where it was listed as a barleywine. It suits a rainy Tuesday in November much better. Orange brown with a light beige head. Malty sweet, fruity a bit peppery and medium bodied with a smooth texture. This is a bitter beast with a resinous green hoppiness and smooth textured raisins plus stone fruits. Much better the second time around!

On tap at Kamikaze. Not in the mood to drink this as what I waited all day tp drink (Ushitora Brewery) for ran out... 750+tx (820) yen for 200 ml 9.2% an opaque deep orange-brown with a filmy beige head and ok lacing. Definitely a us style Barleywine with a huge dank resinous musty hop bouquet and a little maltiness struggling to get through the hop onslaught. Very sharply carbonated and exceptionally bitter - the taste is like licking a pine cone. Not balanced and not really what I want in a Barleywine. I feel it is more like an imperial IPA or triple IPA, just way too hoppy. Maybe if it warms up it’ll improve but at this point I just want to go home... Well i was right, it became slightly more balanced after warming up displaying some malt character but remaining a mistly dank resinous bitter beer. Not at all what I want from a Barleywine...

650 ml. bottle shared by Kraddel during the (Ice) Cider/Perry tasting @ Barely Legal Tasting Room. Thank you! This is clearly some kind of vintage but I cannot find a date on the bottle. It is possible that the Vintage is 2013. Dark amber, little head. Typical oxidized nose, herbal, heavy on herbs, bitter old hops. Taste is bitter oxidized, liquorish, bitter herbal, old hops, oxidized bitter herbal-ness, light toffee, grains. Body is aged. Decent but not stellar.

From a 650ml bottle on 8/10/2014. Pours a cloudy dark golden with fine yeast floaties and a smallish head. Has a delightful and powerful hop filled aroma, with lots of pine, fruit and caramel. In the mouth, it presents more as a DIPA rather than a barley wine, though there’s lots of malt evident. There’s masses going on but it it’s integrated beautifully, with lots of sweet apricot, caramel and toffee, with a smashing, big, dry bitterness which presents a touch of grapefruit and resin. It tastes like a big beer but the alcohol is quite well hidden, and it goes down so easily. Has a full body and a creamy texture, but it’s not particularly sticky, with moderate to average carbonation. Damn this is good stuff - complex, supremely balanced and extremely moreish. A truly incredible beer.

This one has it all, just hiding out of sight. Nice reddish body with minimal head. Aroma is malt and grains, alcohol also tickles the nose. Taste is more malt and (?)....don’t know. I agree with Indiana Red that it might be worth while trying a cellared bottle. Very smooth and drinkable, alcohol hides nicely, and becomes apparent slowly.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 11/25/2012. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, floral, grass, caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, herbal, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and caramel/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, bread, light pine, herbal, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, bread, herbal, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of citrus/floral hop and caramel/bready malt flavors; with a great sweetness/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, moderately slick, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barelywine. All around great balance and complexity of citrus/floral hops and caramel/bready malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance had a dark copper/brown colored body with a one finger white to off white foamy head that tries to settle but leaves a lumpy looking valley of a head.
The smell was malty, slightly sugary, slight hops come forth as it warms.
The taste was bittersweet, wow the most balanced bittersweetness I’ve ever had in an American Barleywine, flavor comes across way better than its smell, bittersweet aftertaste, dry bittersweet finish.
On the palate, it sits at/about dry yet coats the mouth slightly oily, medium in body, fairly sessionable for 9.2 but hey I’m not arguing, carbonation has a good sharpness to it and is good for the style.
Overall, this was a nice dry hopped American Barleywine, if you’re lookin’ for a hoppier barleywine, this may be your guy. However, I need to say, the more this warms, the more it tastes like a DIPA, no worries, I’d still have this again.

Bomber. Aroma is perfumy, burnt caramel, toasty, peachy; smells a little older than I like my barleywines. Pours hazy amber with a medium collapsing beige head. Taste is very much like the Bigfoot template--bittersweet, malt-forward with hops in a supporting role; savory, extreme bitter finish. I think I would like this a lot better if it was fresher, just like Bigfoot.
