Existent represents the philosophy behind Stillwater Artisanal. We strive to define ourselves through our passion and sincerity while accepting that not all aspects of life are readily explainable. To manifest this ideology we present an ale of intrigue. Deep & dark though deceptively dry, braced by a firm yet smooth bitterness and accented with an earthy hop and mild roast aroma. This is an ale for you to define..

Bottle at Dig. Almost black, with the most beautiful garnet shades. Lace. Nose of chocolate, grass, orange, honey. Complex though not completely harmonious. Dry, complex and interesting flavor, much in the "black saison" mode. Good.

Bottle at the Dig Bar Stillwater Event. The brewer himself foudn it hard to categorize this beer but I’d say it is a blend of a robust porter & a saison. It pours a beautiful clear ruby brown. The aroma is nutty & mild at first but over time grows to become more pronounced. Medium bodied, chocolate, nuts and wine notes are present in the taste. This is a subtle beer that like the other Stillwater beers really open up & evolve as they warm up. One of my favorites of the night.

Bottle, 12C. Dark red brown with a beige head that lasts well. Aroma of port and lemon, licorice, vinegar toffee, herbs. Very little sweetness with a real sour herbal twang, bitterness at the finish is rather overmatched. There’s caramel, hints of chocolate, vague dark berries that I wished were more prominent. Pretty dry and drier still at the end with herbal notes (mainly chicory, some star anise, slight metal). What I’d like as nuances are the whole show.

This is an old bottle from Dog Brewing. Aroma has a nice maltiness with chocolate, roast, toasted bread and dark melanoidins. Some lighter caramel and toffee notes. Light fruitiness of plums and prunes. Slight peppery phenolic note. Pours dark brown with a moderately thick tan head that steadily recedes to the edges where it lingers. Small legs and moderate lacing. Flavor has a light sweetness with a moderate roast character. Some light chocolate notes with medium light toasted bread and dark melanoidins. Some fig, plum and prune notes with a medium light peppery phenolic note. Medium bitterness. Light ash and leather note. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium full carbonation. Light but noticeable astringency with medium light alcohol warmth. Overall an enjoyable roasty farmhouse ale that doesn’t quite rise to the level of being a stout and reminds me more of a farmhouse porter. Some nice phenolic and dark fruit notes compliment the malt character. Light sweetness also helps keep this from being too astringent.

THX! for the bottle. 355 ml. bottle @ Delirium Hoppy Loft. Great label as always with these guys. Pours very dark brown, almost touch purple with a tanned head. Nose is a bit too much, lots of soy sauce mixed with prunes, sweet dark fruits, plenty of liquorish, brambleberries. Taste is soy sauce mixed with prunes & brambleberries, plenty of liquorish, brown sugar, teriyaki sauce, bitter herbs, sticky, syrupy feel, somewhat herbal. Def. way more a Belgian Strong Ale than a Belgian Ale, a very odd take on the style, too much of these odd combo’s & flavours, okay but not very impressive & very expensive. I expected more from Stillwater here, not really getting here why the score is so high. Pretty hard to finish a bottle of.
