English-style barleywine ale aged in bourbon barrels.
There are many storms out there, all of them perfect in their own way. But there is only one Mother of all Storms and it only happens in Pacific City, Oregon. Based on Stormwatcher’s Winterfest, our English-style barleywine, Mother of all Storms spent many months aging in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Now at its peak, Mother of all Storms delivers deep flavors of toasted malt, bourbon and oak. The finish rewards with whispers of vanilla, toffee and caramel. Best enjoyed with gusts exceeding 60 mph.

Bottle: Poured a lightly cloudy dark brown color ale with a medium size head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of light whisky notes with some brown sugar, toffee and some pretty robust caramelized malt notes. Taste is a great mix between some toffee notes with some brown sugar and caramelized malt with some whisky notes which kinds of round off the rough edge. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no real apparent alcohol. Very well done but I would have like the residual sugar to be more subtle which would have provide more space for the malt backbone to shine.

2011 Bottle. Opaque dark brown beer, pale tan head. Sweetish bourbon nose. Crispy palate, semi dry. Rich chocolatey malt and bourbon. Alcohol heat. Minerals. Vanilla oak sweetness. Overall a huge beer but the palate is light and crisp. Good but should have left it for a year or three!
8th September 2011
2010 bottle at 13.0%. Palate is crisp and comparatively light. Semi dry. Nice coconut, mildly toasted. Trace of vanilla. A little dark chocolate liquer. Aniseed and brandy alcohol. A bit less aggressive than then 2011.

2011 Bomber from BigTomZ. Nose is tons of prunes and golden raisins, toffee, chocolate, and a hint of vanilla. Dark cherry brown with a big heavy lacing beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, very dark fruity with bigtime toffee.

Bottle at THE Barley Wine Tasting, London. Vintage 2011, thanks to Bruce! Pours black-red with a moderate, beige foam head. Sweet malt nose with rich, toasted caramel, dark fruits. Hugely sweet flavor with lots of dark malts, light cocoa, modest booze, prunes, sticky brown sugar, toffee, mild tangy berries, dark toast, figs. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish with some faintly dry cocoa, loads of boozy fruits, prunes and figs, dark bread. Great nuance, good balance. Wonderful.

Bomber received in trade. 2011 vintage. Thank you Pandableh! Pours dark reddish brown with a small frothy mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with caramel, prunes, raisins, alcohol, biscuits, lemon zest, roasted nuts, bourbon, vanilla fudge, resinous wood and hints of sweet liquorice candy and grass. Taste is sweet and very malty with caramel, biscuits, vanilla fudge, bourbon, coconut, sweet liquorice candy, alcohol, brown sugar, resinous wood, rains, prunes, figs and hints of toasted malts. Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet, bitter and slightly fruity with caramel, sweet dark bread, raisins, prunes, toffee, sweet liquorice candy, bourbon and biscuits. Great stuff!

Bottle, thanks to Bruce at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours very dark brown, with no head. The nose is caramel, toffee, toasted sesame, umami aspect, sweet dark fruit, vanilla and bourbon. The taste is oak, varnish, plum, raisin, prune, lightly vinous, treacle, toffee, toasted malt, sweet liquorice, coconut and bourbon. Full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Alcohol is pretty well hidden. A rich and indulgent barley wine.

22 oz. bottle, sent from BigTomz (thanks a lot, Tom), pours a dark dark amber brown with a small ring of tan head. Aroma of brandy-covered fruits, caramel malts, toffee, vanilla and only slight boozy notes. Flavour is highly alcoholic, not hiding the 13.5% at all, featuring notes of booze-covered fruits, liqueur, caramel, vanilla, and some hints of wood varnish or nail polish remover. Not much notice of the barrels, but the booze is highly intrusive. Quite complex, no cloying sweetness or anything, but it doesn't seem overly refined, which is a similar criticism I had of the base beer (Stormwatcher). Enjoyable but overrated.

2011 bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Aroma was sweetness, dark fruits, sweetness, and plenty of bourbon barrel notes. Flavor was sweet, a bit hot and a little heavy on the bourbon barrel. I can see a great beer in there, but perhaps could have a little more time to rest.
