Drop the dressing and ditch the pumpkin, Sweet Potato Casserole is fresh out of the oven and ready to party. This fall treat is just like moms used to make - only if moms had penchant for gooey marshmallow, fall spices, and gobs of sweet potato cavorting in one sinful glass. Bottoms up.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. A big sweet vegetables and vanilla nose. Very sweet, vanilla, sugary sweet potato. Drinkable. Solid. I don’t want much of this but it’s ok.

Keg at Route CBC, CBC Clapham, 02/10/15. Golden amber topped with a decent light beige swirl. Nose is earthy, sweet tatties, orange, bread dough, light spice, hint of chocolate. Taste comprises sweet and sour vibes, caramel, more sweet potato, light fruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok novelty affair, solid for the style.

Bottle thanks to Homer! Pours hazy burnt umber, medium off-white head, dissipates slowly leaving good lacing. Aroma is sweet, brown sugar, yams, marshmallow, cinnamon, nutmeg. Flavor is fairly sweet, lots of dark sugars, a definite soda taste to it, minimal bitterness, yams and brown sugar present with marshmallow in the background, and a hint of cinnamon and graham cracker. Medium body. This is an odd duck. ABV totally masked.

Craft Clapham. Keg. Route 66 event with most of the London crew. Hazy gold - amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is airy and a little soft. Very fine carbonation. Sweetish malts, some cream. A funky kinda sweetness, maybe vegetal leads to cinnamon and then ripe fruits. Light finish, mild spices linger on. Interesting!

I hate prefacing a rating by saying it’s a hard one to rate, but sometimes it’s hard to factor in various things...lemme start with the good. I had low expectations for this because I’m just generally wary of all these weird flavored beers on the market these days, seems like the craft beer scene is devolving into "what is the worst sounding combo of fruits and vegetables and spices we can throw into this beer?" rather than just trying to make a good beer that tastes like beer and not pie. Plus I hate all the fall pumpkin beers, and while sweet-pot is different, I just wasn’t sure how it would come across in beer. Well turns out it’s pretty good. The sweet-pot components themselves weren’t obvious, more just a novel sweet dessert like element. The vanilla was very present and worked well as a complement. Palate was near perfect, a soft pillowy body with richness that wasn’t cloying. On the whole it’s a successful beer and quite an achievement. So what’ the problem? That sweet dessert like flavor is fascinating but not something you want much of. This is a beer to have in small quantities once in a blue moon. If I had bought more than a single bottle, I can’t imagine how long it would take me to get through that. Could never be a daily beer. To some extent, I think a good beer is a beer you would want at any time, anywhere. A beer you would never pass up. This isn’t that. I’ve used the "overall" sub-score to adjust for that.

Draft at Craft Beer Co. Clapham during Route CBC - London. Pours clear, rich gold with a white cream head. Earthy root vegetables in the nose, slight cinnamon. Medium sweet flavor with a bit of creamy caramel, orange. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sugary finish, bready, with more caramel, orange meringue. Not bad.

Pours cloudy dark orangish color with tan head. Aromas of sweet potato, marshmallow, vanilla, and brown sugar. Similar flavors. Interesting beer that is surprisingly good in small amounts.

Tap at Route CBC. It pours hazy amber with a medium yellow-white head. The nose is sweet potato pie, earthy, squashy, honeyed carbs, cereal and cake. The taste is sweet, sticky, squash, spice, sweet potato, toasty sugars and some stewed orange with a sweet finish. Too one-dimensional and sweet in my opinion. Fun to try, but not one I would return to!
