The history of Braggot dates back centuries in northern Europe. Braggots are meads made with malted barley in addition to the honey. Our Braggot won a Bronze medal at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival. Brewed with wildflower honey and rich, dark specialty malts, the final product is akin to a Scottish Ale, with an added earthy depth and sweetness. Vinous notes combine with earthy flavors and a touch of toffee and biscuit character with just a hint of alcohol warmth. This is a complex sipper sure to warm even the coldest nights.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass; Winter Solstice 2011 bottling. Pours very hazy dark reddish brown color with a small foamy light khaki head with poor retention, that reduces to nothing as expected. Minimal lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, chocolate, raisin, prune, honey, biscuit, tobacco, light nuttiness, floral, and dark earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and honey notes; with hardly any alcohol presence. Taste of big caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, honey, raisin, prune, biscuit, tobacco, leather, light nuttiness, floral, herbal, and dark earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, dark fruit, molasses, honey, biscuit, tobacco, leather, and dark earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of malt flavors with honey; with hardly any cloying sweetness present after the finish. Light carbonation and very full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden for 16%, with only a slight warming noticed after the finish; definitely a slow sipper though. Overall this is a fantastic Braggot style! Incredible complexity and balance of malt/honey flavors; and insanely smooth to sip on for being 16%. A highly enjoyable offering. --- Beer merged from original tick of Braggot Mead on 24 Oct 2013 at 00:38 - Score: 9. Original review text: Awesome braggot! Caramel/toast/toffee/molasses/honey/raisin/prune/biscuit/leather tobacco/earth. Very complex/well balanced, not cloying.

Picked up at Champaneโs Wine Cellars February 2012 and enjoyed in November. The 16% ABV 12oz elixir pours clear amber with a copper looking hue and micro thin tan head. The aroma offers up brown sugar, ripe plums, earthy dates and sugary molasses. Yum! The taste is similar with smooth sweet goodness coming from molasses, brown sugar covered plums and a big earthy dose of dates. This is smooth yummy goodness where the earthiness plays a pleasing role amid the smooth sweetness. Man, I get very little sense of the huge ABV. Dynamite. I need more of this.

12 oz. bottle, sent from northernbrews (thanks a lot, Jeff), pours a beautiful dark mahogany with no head. Aroma is very rich on the honey, some dark fruits, brown sugar and port-like liqueur. Flavour is very rich and malty, with loads of brown sugar and honey upfront, with port-like liqueur then seeping in along with various dark berries. Very viscous, almost chewy, with the 16% ABV exceedingly well-concealed. Very enjoyable on a cold, rainy night like tonight.

12 oz bottle, 2011 on the label. Pours deep brown with a little off-white ring of a head. Dark bready aroma, dark fruit, honey, caramel, molasses, tiny hint of plastic. Flavor is sweetish molasses, honey, caramel, some toasted rye bread, raisin. Itโs pretty good.

12 oz bottle (2011 label simply says Braggot) from lionsandbeer. Nose is dark caramelized honey, light alcohol, and an almost sake like rice note that makes it smell somewhere between a sake and a mead. Hazy brown with a small beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet with brown aged honey and a flowery note. I tastes again kind of sake like.

Thanks to Rogueone for sharing a bottle. Pours a deep clear copper-brown color with a minimal head. Some spots of lacing. The aroma consists of caramel and fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruits and sweet honey. Slight alcohol in the background too. The finish is sweet and leaves a short honey aftertaste. Decent Mead overall.

Bottle. Pours a near clear deep amber brown with an off white head that dissipates completely. Aroma has a good note of sweet honey with a bit of backing spice. Flavor is sweet with honey backed by a good amount of spice.

12oz March08 bottle. Recently shared one that went sour. :( Bottle before that during the winter was questionably just down the line. Iโm thinking I could easily bunt this one foul & strike out here. Poured into my Ommegang Anniversary glass. Dark brown/orange wood stain color, surprising amount of glittery off-white/creamer-colored head. Smells of butter & stewed pears. Weird sour candy berry syrup smell on the approach that I can see people labeling strawberry. It disappears once youโre on top. Much bigger is the sticky Euro beer, stale Honey Nut Cheerios & charred newspaper. Alcohol is like aerosol, but seems approachable. Taste is again certainly sour. Lemon tea. Once that passes, I get medicinal concord sweetness & along with that, burnt honey. A plastic & leafy bitterness follows. The body dries considerably after that. Of course this is infected. Still manages to coat the lips. Just a touch of carbonation. Stale grain on the finish, with a little lingering acidity. Confusing, interesting & sloppy all at the same time.

2002 bottle that my friend finally decided to open. Deep gold with light orange and slight amber tinges. Plenty of sediment loosely floating around, light bit of white bubbles clinging to the edge of the glass. Aroma of strong honey and alcohol, light herbal notes as well. Some dry yeast, and a good dose of freshly picked wildflowers. Begins strong and sweet, with a pleasing bite to it from the alcohol and zesty but low carbonation. Light orange and rusty, caramelly notes mix together in the body, with a hint of sourness on the finish and a good dose of sharp alcohol. Medium to medium full body. Great flavor, but just needs more aging to bring out some more complexities and nuances; they are there, no doubt.
