Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from the brewery. Pours mostly clear gold with a frothy, white head. Gorgeous, lambic-like, grassy, with subtle acidity, lemon, straw, some citrus accents. Light bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Cleansing finish, quenching, more citric tartness, grassy bitterness. Tons of character for the ABV, and highly drinkable.

Bottle from the Kernel. It pours lightly hazy gold with a tiny white head. The aroma is funky, vinous, white wine, lemon - lime, orange sherbet, tangerine, oak and light vanilla. The taste is crisp, firmly dry, light tartness, apricot, nectarine, tangerine, bit of sherbet, oak, earth, funk, vinous, gooseberry and hay with a drying finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Well rounded. Very drinkable stuff.

Kernel farmhouse ale from a 75 cl bottle, shared with Goedele at Ganzerik in Ghent. Loosely structured, snow white, moussy but quite coarse and collapsing head, eventually vanishing, over a misty ‘old gold’ to peach coloured beer with somewhat off-pinkish tinge. Aroma of pineapple juice, cider, wet wood, stale sweat, lots of lychee, lime juice, pear, white dessert wine, camomile tea, sourdough. Fruity, mildly estery onset, lots of lychee, sweet apple (even cider) and pineapple again, pear- and starfruit-like side notes, crisp and sweet in its core but with a white grape tartness to it with softly drying effect; finely tingling carbonation, slick mouthfeel. The aforementioned fruity flavours persist over a supple white bready malt body; ends drying (white wine tartness again even if this is aged on red wine barrels), a tad earthy and a little bit ‘dirty’ in its bready yeastiness, some sweaty Brett-like hints and a lot of aromatic, tropical New World hoppiness from the El Dorado, again strongly reminiscent of lychee and providing soft end bitterness, but it is the aromatic fruitiness, from the esters, hops and the wine barrel that receive all the credit here. Typical 21st-century Anglo-Saxon farmhouse ale, a ‘wild’ ale with complex yeast profile, colourfully aromatic and exotic hopping and mild tartness – I hesitate to call this type of modern beers ‘saison’, but in any case this combo of flavours works well for me, with quenching and very summery, ‘bright’ effect yet lots of body and depth (even at this AVB) at the same time. Another testimony of The Kernel’s technical skills, refinement and good taste.
A bit weird this beer isn’t mentioned anywhere else besides Moeder Lambic… Not that sour, and taste disappearing quickly.

Aftertaste: acidic, grains, bit malty, hoppy, sourish, some tannins. Not getting very wild about this...
