A red beer with a pink head. The aroma is sweet with powerful notes of black currant - and so is the flavor, but in the flavor there’s hints of acidity, and the body is thin. Not impressed.

To quote Mr. Horse: "No sir, I didn’t like it!". Not sure what this is supposed to be but it didn’t do much for me. Pours the color of cherry cough syrup with a thin pinkish beige head. Thin lacing. The aroma consists of sour fruit (cranberries mostly) and a bit of yeast. Medium-bodied and bubbly with an overpoweringly sour character. Cranberry, banana and yeast flavors dominate, and frankly the one-trick-pony aspect of it got old pretty quick. The finish was more of the same, sour fruit (cranberries and grapes). I won’t bother with this one again.

Ommegang fest. Bottle. Hazy golden ale. Light fruity aroma but no currant here. Nice sweet wheat beer with more grapes than currant. Sweet finish.

Bottle Poured a light orange amber with a nice foamy off-white head.. The lacing was good and the aroma was of light malt and hops, yeast and dough. The alcohol was noticeable and it had a light to medium body with average carbonation. The after taste had a bit of a bite. Not my favorite DFH.

Well, Dogfish Head is finally available in Michigan! Au Courant poured a hazy yellow-orange with a thin off-white head. Currant aroma (smelled somewhat like raspberry), quite tart and vegetably. Flavor was sweet and sugary like most Dogfish Head beers, with currant flavors that were by no means overwhelming. Perhaps a touch of earthy hops and a hint of biscuity malt shine through, but overall the palate is rather muddled and too sweet.

Update 18 January 2005. Picked up a new bottle of this beer and it is now purple! Still not impressed by the flavor, however, which is mostly tangy fruit skin and earthiness.

Sampled at the Southside Beer Expo. Oddly, it seems to have been built on a hefeweizen base, but that just may be the leftovers in my sample glass. Fruit character also gives it a Belgian note, with matly sweetness followed by a winey driness.

Hazy light tan colour. Black currant aroma with hints of slightly toasty malt. Fruity taste with bready malts backing it up. Slightly salty. Finishes sweet and slightly plasticy. I like blackcurrants, but I don’t like the balance here. Salt and plastic are not what I need in a beer, and it’s too sweet. Less malt for a lower abv and fewer residual sugars would be a good start.

This was an interesting though not entirely successful idea. +++Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a nice copper color with almost no head. There is a sweet grape scent. Clarity is good. The brew is thick in texture with a tart and hoppy flavor. The Flavor is most distinctly artificial blueberry. Not good artificial blueberry either - not even in the BooBerry class. A little bit of bitterness. The strong artificial flavor really ended up turning me off to this one - but I could still drink it without too much hesitation.

2004 draught @ Sunset Grill. Rosy pink/peach with some deeper reds and coppers. Very pleasing color, though could be a bit more hazy. Decent off-white head with some darker pinkish-elderberry tinges. Smells of fleshy fruit, like pungent fresh peaches and poignant juicy currants (or any dark berries for that matter). Light bitter notes, with a lightly sweet candy flavor as well. Light perfumy esters. Very complex and delicate aroma. Flavor begins with a lightly sweet, lightly tart currant flavor, with some crystalized sugar flavors as well. Smooth, moderately dry medium body and a big sweet finish with hops in the mix. Very interesting beer, just enough sweetness for a fruit beer, and to hide the alcohol, but not enough to get cloying. As it warmed, the hops, fruit and malt came together wonderfully and it had a creamy almost bubbly texture. Low carbonation, very good, IMHO.
Late 2004-2005 version, draught @ Redbones Somewhat more malt sweetness and a bit more accessible fruit (though I liked the previous version’s more sour, grape-rind-like flavor). Still, I loved it before and it’s still a very unique and well-made beer.
