As with all Gueuzes, Hanssens is a mixture of several vintages to produce a lambic which is refreshingly fruity. This is the result of blending different lambics of different ages. The second fermentation takes place inside the bottles and therefore they are stored for minimum six months in constant temperature kept cellars.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 23E). Bottle 75 cl - Batch unknown (Bottled on NOV.2016). AROMA: medium-high sour aroma (acetic) with slight barnyard and woody notes. APPEARANCE: gold colour and clear. medium-low white head with low retention. TASTE: similar to the aroma with medium-high sour flavour (acetic-like). faint barnyard and wood notes. low bitterness with a dry and tartaric finish. PALATE: low body with low carbonation. overly tartaric with a slight astringency. OVERALL: an oude gueuze overly acetic (maybe too much acetobacter) and unbalanced with the absent malt.

0,375 l bottle from April 2016. Pours golden with huge rocky white head. Aroma is sour and fruity, apples and grapes, tart with some funk and a bit of barnyard. But sour fruity notes dominate it. Fruity aroma is noticeable quite far from the glass. Taste is low sweet and low to medium bitter, medium pleasant sourness. Body is medium, texture slick and carbonation mild sparkling after it settles. Finish is dry, sour fruit lingers in the mouth. Very refreshing.

22 February 2019. Bierproeverij CVO Gent, thanks Tim, cheers to Ghent beer posse & the lovely Anke. Bottled: 4/2016. Pours clear pale golden with a small, frothy, off-white head; little lacing. Aroma of green apple, leather, vinegar, lactic acid, wood, cellar, dust, cheese. Taste is heavy to medium funky sour, quite leathery, lactic acid & vinegar, toned down by (sweetish) green apple; light woody bitter then, faint tannins, yeast & sourdough, a bit metallic & cheesy, still very much lemony sour too. Very dry, mouth-puckering finish, woody tannins, cellar, apple & lactic acid. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Very good, just a tad too much lemon & green apple for my liking.

Bottle from the Offie, Leicester. Drunk at home. Orange/gold with some visible carbonation and some white filmy head. Sour crabapple, sourdough, very light mothball funk. The taste is lightly tart with a touch of apple sweetness in the middle which disappears in the dry finish. Soft to medium carbonation. Not the most complex gueuze out there but it's immenintly drinkable.

Bottle, bottled march 2017. Color: Hazy golden, frothy white head. Aroma: Brett, sour berries, apple. Taste: Brett funk, moderate to medium tart, notes of apple and hints of grapes and berries. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Bit flat and missing complexity compared to other Oude Gueuzes.
