Bottle sample @ 2nd RBBSG, August 11th 2012. Courtesy of Benzai. Bottle 210/362, anno 09/2009.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - bottle nr 520, at Pikkulintu, 20111128) The beer poured black and oily without forming any head. Aroma had vanilla, roasted malts and wood. Palate was full bodied and dry with low carbonation. Flavours were vanilla, chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, wood and bitterness. Aftertaste was warming, roasty, ashy and bitter. Even though I feel that using oak chips is cheating I liked this one: wood and beer were in balance.

Drunk to celebrate my rating 22,100. Bottled. A pitch black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of wood, chocolate, vanilla, alcohol, and cognac. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol, cognac, vanilla, and a bit of wood, leading to a dry roasted and alcoholic finish.

Bottle #0367 Brewed on 06 September 2010 Bottled on 21 October 2010 Sampled on 16 September 2011 Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a nice frothy deep brown head that’s about one centimetre tall. Aroma of nice fresh chocolate, caramel, vanilla pods, alcohol, oak, peaches, pit fruit and even a touch of hops. Full-bodied; Deep pungent malts with a lot of sweetness, a ton of chocolate, a bit of coffee and a lot of pit fruits and prunes. A good bit of effervescence shows with a lot of sweetness, a strong bunch of alcohol that finishes well. Aftertaste shows a bunch of oak, brandy, vanilla and roasted malt - a touch of yeast noticeable at the end as well. Overall, a very nice imperial stout with a good complexity, a nice deep flavour and a good effervescence which is usually muted with the heavier beers. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Cracked Kettle in Amsterdam, Holland, The Netherlands on 03-January-2011 for €4.36 sampled at home in Washington on 16-September-2011 as my 3200th beer (rated, at least)!

Drunk straight after the regular version. Very similar palate. Light, soft and airy. The flavour, howeverm is quite different. A very woody sweet taste dominates, close to cinnamon but it’s not cinnamon! Some banana sweetness underpins. Not as complex as the base beer but unusual and very drinkable!

I have no idea how to pronounce anything in this beer’s name other than the "&". But it looks amazing, black and giving up a thick, lasting head that leaves lacing galore down the side of the tulip. The smell, though, causes a bit of apprehension, giving up your usual suspects of an Impy Stout, but also having a hint of tart sourness underneath. The taste alleviates all worries, though, sweet yet bitter, with a coffee finish that lasts forever. The boozy fade informs you of the cognac involved, yet the mocha heart of the brew keeps everything smooth and creamy. (4/23/09)
