Oktoberfest lagers are the ultimate party beer. Up front, they’re rich, sweet, and malty, but they finish dry and clean with an ever-so-slight touch of hops. Prost!

Notes from 10/28/2008. Forgot about a can of this in the back of the fridge that I received from Pitmonkey in a trade last year. Only remembered it once I got my hands on this year's batch. Short arms & the fact that I haven't changed the bulb in there in a long time means there are always surprises. :) Pours out ugly from both cans. Sediment-y, hazy, & greasy-looking, it saves itself a bad score with a strong cascading effect that builds into a nice bit of fluff topping off the glass. A little stiffer in the vintage stuff, which looks a touch more grainer & dirty after it settles. More caramel in the nose of the older one, but both are dominated by dry-hopping. A little more resiny in the elder, where the newer stuff is more sharp with citrus. Touch more rye twang in the fresh stuff, maybe some honey-ish notions, but both have a considerable talcum drying effect leading the way to zesty juiciness. A feels more grainier then B, but both powder on the hops. Not an intense bitterness, but very constant after the brief unfamiliarity in the beginning. All left turns once you get past the intersection of rye & malt. My tongue is a bit numb to boot.

16 oz. draft. Clear gold color with no head. A very smooth and clean malty lager. German-style Oktoberfest beer. Slightly sweet. Very repeatable.

Aromas are decent with toast and some toffee malt. Flavors are similar but with the inclusion of some herbal something or other. Slightly on the sweet side. Okay body and finish.

12 oz can purchased as a single at the Lukas Liquor Superstore in Overland Park, Kansas. Canned on 8/13/20. The pour is a crystal clear golden reddish with a three inch foamy off white head that is quite lasting. The aroma is caramel cereal malt, a bit of floral. The taste is clean fresh malt, bready, with the floral and a bit of earthy herbal. The palate is light to medium bodied, active carbonation and the floral herbal to the finish. Tasty beer.

Can from Holiday Market. Pours a deep gold with a full finger of white foam that lingers. Lovely malty, bready nose with some honey and light mineral notes. Crisp and clean, good body with more honey breaded malt. Dry finish with good carbonation, light mineral and nice peppery slightly citrusy hops. Perfect with dinner tonight.

Can from mashmaster, thanks! Amber color. Grapefruit, grapes and grassy hops in the aroma. Sharp citric, almost vinous flavor with grassy hops, grapefruit and pineapple. Very a-typical, but likeable festbier.

From May 2008

I got this can in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John!

Yet another Surly beer for me to try. ;^)

This pours a slightly hazy amber with a big +2 finger head of billowy foam. I see some floaties but I'm hoping that won't negatively impact the flavour. Oh and there's plenty of sticky lacing.

The smell is very nice! Lots of lemon citrus matched equally by lots of rye and some caramel malt. To me, a perfectly balanced nose.

The taste...hell, there's no denying that this is a beer using rye as it's right there and it's tasting great. The single hop that they are using gives me both lemon and some pine and the rye and a bit of caramel malt compliments the hops very nicely. Good medium mouthfeel and fairly light carbonation make for a very drinkable beer. This is just a real palate pleasing, easy drinking brew and I could drink a few of these easily without getting bored.

With the final pour, I didn't get any more floaties,(a good thing)just more of that hazy amber goodness. Btw, great head retention here. Well done, again, Surly!

Bottom line: This is a very tasty and drinkable Rye beer that I wouldn't hesitate to try again. Highly recommended!

Can. A- Rye, malty, dough, sweet bread. A- Copper color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Caramel, bread, dough, malty, toast. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- Certainly the best Oktoberfest I’ve had hands down. Even though it’s not super traditional in the sense, it’s quite easy to drink and full of flavor. Paired really well with some spicy fried chicken.

16 oz. can, sent for review. A nice light amber pour under a sudsy head. There’s a spicy rye smell to the nose, and the hop seems more of an English earthy note with a bit of Noble hop, perhaps because the rye and the color give it a hint of a Newcastle. Taste carries on the rye spiciness, but also seems to carry some smoothness as if there’s oatmeal in the mix, too. Thought htis is only a minor variation on a solid, malty Oktoberfest.
