Wheeltappers Wheat Beer

Old rating from 2014 - 500ml bottle, pours golden with a large white foamy head. Aromas & tastes of lemon, banana, citrus, vanilla, coriander & wheat malt. Moderate body. Mildly bitter finish

Bottle from Moonshine and Fuggles at Ironbridge. Slightly hazy gold with a middling white. Lemon and lime up front give a pleasant and refreshing light sourness to the beer. Mild bitterness in the finish. Quite pleasant.

Hazy gold beer, big pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and minerally crisp. Airy malts, trace of creamy sweetness. A sourish lemony floralness, touch of herb. Light semi dry finish. Interesting!

500ml bottle. Pours pale gold with a large, frothy head. Aroma is coriander, basil and a little lemon. Taste has a little coriander to start and a strong coriander and basil finish.

Cask @ Old Harker Arms, Chester. Golden with a thick creamy head. It’s mild tasting with a floral aroma and taste but a higher sweetness in its nose.

Cask @ Shrewsbury Beer Festival. Nice and tasty vanilla sweet wheat, a little silkier than the grainy wheats but lovely stuff nonetheless. A nice mid-fest beer.

50cl bottle from the Spar at Rhos on Sea. There’s definitely the expected tang of unmalted wheat in here and the lemon zest added, increases this aroma and and taste. It’s fairly true to the style, but I’d really have liked something of a bit more intensity - maybe orangey and a bit more creamy. It could do with just a little more body though I generally do like this style, so still enjoyable.

500ml Bottle (bottle conditioned) poured into a Franziskaner Weissbier glass just to see what it would look like in it! BBD end of May 2013, opened at home on 30 Apr 2013. To be fair it looked fine: hazy golden body with a huge head, carbonisation bubbles rising through the misty brew. No sediment left the bottle, latter I poured those into the remains of the initial pour, it obviously became more cloudy and tastier. Grain and yeast notes in the aroma. Crisp and refreshing in the grainy taste, I did expect a bit more flavour to be honest, no obvious wheat beer atributes at first, apart from the look. It claims to have corriander and lemon zest within the brew, as it warmed a little hints of those characteristics but in no great depth, until the sediment was added to the glass, only then did ’take off’, it was like two different beers. Pleasant enough, but lacks adventure and ’umph’ to be a great example of a UK brewed wheat beer. I’ll certainly have a cask version if I see one again: it wasn’t ready for sale on the only time I’ve come across it on draught. My scores are for the initial pour, with consideration of the sediment strength!

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 5/09/2011. Clear gold with next to no head. Light, apricot and grassy hop aroma. Flavour had some more fruit, grainy malts and vaguely spicy, dryish finish. More like a bitter than a witbier.
