Ouden Vat is a member of the Flemish Red family. It is the result of a well-thought blend of different Brett-refermented and lactic bacteria-refermented ales. It has aged on wooden barrels for over a year. What you get is an ideal compromise between a complex and refreshing beer.
It has a dark amber colour, with a hint of ruby. It is beautifully clear, thanks to her long maturation, and her foam is extremely fine. Although she contains no fruit at all, she has a very fruity nose, dominated by cherries on alcohol and some woodiness. In the mouth, she has a well-maintained acidity, complimented by a wonderful creaminess. Her light saturation makes her an easily digestible beer. Among its flavours we recognise griottes cherries, blackberries, prunes from Agen, and blueberries. We also find caramel, and a slight roasty touch. Her finale is very round and brings us back to blueberries.

330mL bottle, best before October 2021, drunk 9/22/2024. So this is probably six years old but smells and looks great. Clear, amber, ruddy. Beige head, well-retained. Classic flemish sour ale nose with balsamic, big oak, cherry and plentiful lactic acid. Not too acetic, though, of course, it's there. Lactic, dry, long sourness, good malt but very dried out at this point. Soft, clean, almost chocolatey with honey, currant, raisin and cherry. Strong brett, strong lactic, moderate acetic. Very tart and acidic.

330mL bottle, pours a hazy dark chestnut reddish brown with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out toasted chestnuts, light balsamic, wood, and some red fruits. Flavour is gently tart and nicely dry, with lots of wood, gentle balsamic, tart red fruits, and a touch of funk. Nice woodiness and fruitiness to this. Very well-made.

Bottle from Etre Gourmet, webshop Grez-Doiceau, Belgium. Consumed at home Sunday 9th May 2021 after a nice 10-11km walk around Schliersee. We had Chicken, Chorizo and Halloumi kebabs in the wood oven. On a Zoom chat with Nick and Anna, which would ok last six and a half hours 😯Pours murky reddy/brown with an off white head. The nose is a little woody with a hint of balsamic. Tangy, tart, zappy reasonably acidic, sweet and then sour, sharp berries, there is a lengthy dry finish. Fruity, furry moutheel. I like this. Good

330 ml bottle from Etre Gourmet, bottled 08 Oct 19. Dark red body, with a medium, creamy, beige head. Aroma of overripe fruits, leather, balsamico, dark berries, dried fruits, some vanilla. Tastes quite similar, with more cocoa powder. Medium, slightly creamy mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. Finishes moderate sour, a bit sweet, medium dry, wooden, a bit vinous, with cocoa, dried fruits, some leather, some balsamico. Very nice. Quite typical style example, while really well balanced, with the right levels of sourness and sweetness, drinkability and complexity. Not among their best barrel aged stuff, but lovely nonetheless. Score: 7 / 4 / 7 / 4 / 15

Delicious Flanders Red! Modest acidity, light sweetness and some herbal bitterness balanced to perfection. Works very well with the spaghetti marinara too which definitely wasn’t given.
