The Class of ’88 Barley Wine was based on the guidelines published in renowned beer connoisseur Fred Eckhardt’s The Essentials of Beer Style, which was originally published in 1988. Each of the three breweries working on the project brewed their own interpretation of that original recipe. The three resulting barley wines have a common heritage and ingredients, and brewers from Deschutes Brewery, North Coast Brewing Company and Rogue Ales teamed up at each respective location to brew the beer(s).

“Working collaboratively to create this barley wine has been an adventure for all of us,” said Cam O’Connor, brewmaster for Deschutes Brewery. He spent time at both Rogue and North Coast as they brewed their versions of the beer together. “Sharing ideas and partnering to celebrate this landmark date in our shared histories promises to result in some extraordinary beer. The best part of the process, for me, was the camaraderie experienced spending time at each other’s facilities.”

Juicy smelling, but with some big hop nose. Quite hazy from the get-go, golden-amber colour with a warm cap, decent retention and foamy lacing. Mild caramel base aromas with some nice citrus notes and like mentioned, grassy, herbal hops. The taste is juicier with lots of oranges, pineapples and other tropical fruits. Slick, lightly oily mouthfeel. The hops are balanced for the flavours, adding a little zing, spiciness. This blends better with the sweetness. Very interesting, different juicy IIPA with an East Coast feel.

Can: Poured a hazy/cloudy dirty yellow color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of hoppy floral undertones with some unrefined grainy malt notes is OK. Taste is a mix of hoppy floral undertones with some unrefined grainy malt notes with some residual sugar notes. Body is full with good carbonation. Interesting but something is off with the malt bill.

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Thick hazy orange golden pour, one finger creamy head, streaky lacing. Fruity aroma, melon, citrus, caramel. Taste has more pronounced melon flavors, orange, citrus peel. Velvety, mouthfeel.

Fairly hazy deep copper and orange coloured body with a thin, single centimetre tall tan and light brown head on top of the sixty per cent opaque deep orange hazy tints. Aroma of super pungent grainy and biscuity malts with caramel, toffee and even soy sauce noticeable, but also with some light sweetness, but oddly - no hop notes or alcohol warmth noticeable! Full-bodied; Very strong meaty and mushroomy malt flavours show through at first with a caramel, nutty and very bready bite right behind, with some resin and flowers noticeable as well, along with some alcohol, but the funky malts and yeast are strongest. Aftertaste is deep, super funky, quite malty, very sweet and still showing a tiny dose of fruits - melons, papaya and navel oranges show through, but are very mild. Overall, a very interesting beer - definitely unfiltered, but the malt is strongest along with nuts, earth and funky biscuity and yeastie flavours, but alcohol and sweetness (from caramelised sugars) eventually comes through, just in a complete jumbled mess. Decent to try from Oregon, but not worth grabbing. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 24-October-2020 for US$3,99 sampled the next day at my house here in Washington on 25-October-2020.

Murky golden-to-orange-to-light amber. Sweet hay malts, with a grassy zingy hop bite with a slight tangerine aftertaste mixed in with grass and resin. Decent.

14 March 2020. Pre-Lockdown (in hindsight) Tasting with Anke & Pieter. Pours cloudy yellow with a lasting, thin, foamy, white head. Aroma of peach, yellow nectarine, mango, onion, lychee, cheese, dough, vague medicin. Taste has sweet nectarine, peach & lychee, bitter stonefruit wiht a sourish undertone, dank accents of cheese & onion and solid doughy malts. Dryish, floral hoppy finish, dank & doughy, fresh yellow fruit, soft alcohol glow. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Full, tasty NEIPA, yet not the richest of its kind.

Can from Firefly, Vancouver, canned 10/14/19, 8.6% ABV
Cloudy dark yellow colour, with small head. Gentle fruity aroma. Moderate fruity flavour, undefined; stone fruit, plums and grapes maybe; it's mildly sweet but the sweetness is accentuated by the lack of bitterness; the malt base is very light, almost absent; it hides the alcohol quite well.
Not bad.
