Boreale Scotch Ale du Nord 7.5% Deep brown with fast-dissipating beige foam. The aroma is caramel and biscuits while the taste lends a balancing herbal bitterness. Medium to full in body with a raspy carbonation which gives it a fairly dry finish. Decent.

Bottle: Poured a translucid copper color ale with a nice off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry caramelized malt notes with clean cereal notes is quite enticing. Taste is also a mix of dry caramelized malt notes with light residual sugar notes with some clean cereal notes. Body is a bit thin for style with good carbonation. Easy drinking version of the style but well balanced overall.

Draft: Poured clear amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with light retention. Aroma of lightly sweet caramelized sugar with subtle toffee notes is actually quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by sweet caramelized sugar notes with some subtle toffee notes with a light cereal finish. Body is light with good carbonation. Definitely not the most complex example of the style but still enjoyable and super high drinkability.

A reddish copper brown scotch ale with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with light grassy hops, light peated notes, light treacle, pleasant. In mouth, a nice sweet caramel malt with loads of butterscotch, light smokey notes, light grassy hops, nice and smooth. On tap at Balthazar Laval.

A reddish amber ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with butterscotch notes, nutty, OK. In mouth, a sweet nutty and fruity malt with light Butterscotch, water, a bit boring. On tap at Mondial 2014.

Bouteille 341ml, sous le nom Scotch Ale du Nord. Couleur acajou trouble, mousse beige. Arôme de malt caramélisé, un peu métallique, raisin rouge, caramel brûlé. Goût de malt caramélisé, cassonade, sucré, légère amertume. Carbonatation moyen, corps moyen-dense.

Effluves de pomme à la tire caramélisée au premier nez. s’étirant dans des accents de jujube, de boisson gazeuse et de fruits confits. Le coté caramel pur n’est pas très bien prononcé. Il s’expose surtout dans ses sucres. L’olfactif manque également de puissance. De couleur brune avec une petite mousse légèrement effervescente qui se maintient quelques secondes. Le caramel se développe d’avantage en gustatif avec des notes de beurre, une chaleur bien présente et une finale légèrement houblonnée. Le caramel reste encore trop discret par rapport à d’autres Scotch Ales. On y décèle bien quelques fruits confits, une pointe de mélasse et une finale légèrement résineuse, mais on attends toujours l’explosion de saveurs et la complexité des sucres qui ne vient pas. Par contre, la texture sirupeuse et la chaleur d’alcool bien présente, sauve un peu la note. Je reste sur mon appétit cependant et un peu déçu de cette Boréale.

Pours a clean copper colour with a frothy beige head, decent retention and a little lace. Aromas are mild with sweet toffee, burnt roasted malts and some hoppy grass. This last one seems to disappear as the beer breathes, and metallic notes appear. Sweet tasting, but not overly. Malty mostly with the caramel mixed to the light hop finish. The roasted malt seems well balanced in there. Hints of dark fruits and spices. Not a complex Scotch ale, but an easier drinking one, which tastes better with time.
