Draft @ Molenhof.

Draft glass @ Beerlovers Bar. Very hazy orange, little head. Nos is bitter – served too cold for me – bitter murky orange peel, rather thick yeast. Taste is bitter, thick orange peel & thick yeast, lots of yeast, low herbal bitterness, orange peel, sugar,… Improved a bit when it warmed up. Yeast was far too heavy, bitterness carries no fruity or interesting notes otherwise, just plain bitter with substantial yeast. Not very successful, there is worse.

APA by Struise, draft at Beerlovers Bar in Antwerp. Apparently the same basic recipe as Tongue Puncher - the first real Belgian APA - but hopped differently and at a different point in the brewing process. Thin but dense, egg-white head quickly dissolving in the middle but retaining as a firm rim around the glass, completely cloudy peach blonde robe with ochre hue. Aroma, frankly, stinks in first instance: the infamous wet dog, stale sweat, old urine even, rotting weeds, moldy oranges but fortunately some uplifting notes of yellow kiwi, mango, lemon zest and apricot as well. Very vividly fruity onset, more estery than your average American APA but mixed with early hop fruitiness too, with impressions of starfruit, mango, green banana and lychee; medium carbo, supple and soft ’fluffy’ mouthfeel. Slender bready malt middle with a caramelly edge, sustaining the fruitiness and evolving into a long, spicy, grapefruity and mango-like hop character, adequately but softly bittering as is to be expected from the style, bit resinous, but unfortunately disturbed by that wet dog and urine off-flavor which returns retronasally and penetrates the flavor to an extent that makes it less pleasant to drink. Something apparently went wrong here, this is far removed from the high quality standard I am used to from Struise... Not sure what happened, but since other people (not just here) seem to be positive about this, I’ll give it another chance if I would encounter it again on another occasion.

The beer is a medium orangey amber. Completely clouded through. Looks sorta thick. Smallish white head. Dissipates slowly. Hops are mild in the aroma. Some nice fruitiness. A little bit of citrus and stone fruit. Mild but sweet doughy malt character. Taste is moderately sweet with moderate to medium bitterness. Hop flavor gets a little bland and there’s a funny almost sour-ish hop note to it - not an actual sour beer flavor. Fairly clean otherwise. Nothing really wrong with the beer. Just sorta mild and lacks bright fresh flavors that I prefer in hoppy beers. More body to it than expected. Fairly full feel. Not bad, not great.

Aroma is malty with a a bit of honey, caramel and cracker notes. Some light herbal hop notes with some citrus and a touch of tropical fruit. Pours a hazy, copper orange with a medium sized, thick, slightly off-white head that recedes to the edges where it lingers for quite some time. Moderate lacing and no legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with some caramel and honey notes as well as a bit of toasted bread and cracker. Medium to medium high bitterness. Hop notes of grapefruit, pine resin, a bit of orange and hints of tropical fruit. Hints of the alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent pale ale/IPA but it’s on the malty side. Hop profile is a bit muted and it’s a bit sweet for me. Good bitterness.
