You hold the marriage of wine and beer. Belgian Red is a tapestry of flavor. This beer is brewed with whole Montmorency Cherries, Wisconsin Farmed Wheat and Belgian Roasted Barleys, lagered in oak tanks and balanced by Hallertau hops we aged in our brewery one full year.

Over a pound of Door County Cherries in every bottle makes this beer uniquely "Wisconsin." So unique, in fact, that we applied for a patent. Expect this beer to be ruby red, with a medium body that is highly carbonated and intense with cherry flavor and bouquet. Serve your friends Belgian Red in a brandy snifter or champagne flute and toast life with beer from the land of Wisconsin.

750 ml bottle with wax sealer-thanks to the transport from Rutgers 6 months ago to Wisconsin and his girlfriend for sharing. Aroma is cherry, taste follows, OK carbonation, good body, a bit of hops, good finish. A bit like a good cherry pie meets a nice beer. Nice taste. 3.4. 110806--thanks Bigmmartin. 3.8

Bottle: Poured a clear light pink/red color ale with a huge bubbly head with average retention. Aroma of delicate sweet cherries is enchanting; I could spend hours smelling this beer. Taste is perfect with nice balance mix between naturally sweet cherries and malt. Subtle sourness at the end brings everything together for a perfect close. Carbonation is perfect for a fruit beer as well as carbonation and level of sweetness. Truly the best fruit beer I ever tasted.

2004 bottle thanks to Footbalm and Flemdawg. Tried side-by-side with a 2003 Cantillon Kriek. Needless to say, this one didnt quite come out on top, but for what it was, I was very pleased. Especially after drinking the vastly unbalanced and cloying Raspberry tart. Wonderful pour, murky, muddled dark red and burgundy with browns and tans swriling about. Cloudy, unfiltered and bottle conditioned. Aroma of tart, fresh cherries, moderate sweetness with some wheat and a light yeast influence. Flavor opens up with a burst of ripe cherries followed quickly by a touch of lightly tart yeast. Hops add a touch of balance, and while the cherries do not quite overwhelm with sweetness, there is no want of sugar, fruit and sweet malt here. What I could use more of, is the wonderful tart lambic flavor hiding in the background. On the finish, some hops are evident, earthy, lightly sharp, rusty and old, with a good dose of wheat and yeast, but it is not quite enough to stop the cherries. I like what New Glarus is doing; these beers are fresh and wonderfully crafted, but they need to tone down the fruit, at least in my opinion. Only traces of sourness or oak can be felt, while there is a touch of oily roast on the very end, the cherry tartness and meaty pulpiness of it really overshadows everything. A good beer and one that would age well. I do need to try some extensively aged samples of this (and the raspberry) before passing a final judgement, but for now it is too sweet and only adds yeast tartness/sourness as an afterthought.

Bottle. Dark red/brown colour. Aroma of cherries/cherry sauce. Quite sweet, slightly acidic. Acidity burns at the back of my throat.

An unclear red beer with a disappearing beige head. The aroma contains notes of marcipan and cherries. While the flavor contains notes powerful notes of fruit and cherries.

Bottle Celebrating my #100 Very little head or lacing. Aroma is an intoxicating sweet/tart cherry that starts to fill the room before I bring the glass up to my nose. Flavors are cherry of course but a bit earthy like skins or stems. Sweet with lingering tart trailer. Rate is from memory a few days ago. Will have another soon and update.

Thanks to Eyedrinkale for sharing this at Brewtopia ’04. Deep red color. The aroma is outstanding! Rich, fresh cherries! No hop aroma here, this lets the cherries take the front of the stage and they don’t disappoint at all. The flavor is nicely tart with fruity sweetness which is perfectly in balance. A delightfully different beer.

Rating #1000!: Hazy burgundy/amber colour with a thin pinkish tan head. Aroma of cherries, raspberries, caster sugar, tart strawberries and a light vinegary twang. Full-bodied; Sour cherry flavour, not too tart, but plentiful sweet cherry qualities. A bit of spicey hints, but mostly sour perfectly balanced with sweetness. Aftertaste has a great mouthful-cherries and some caramel/brown sugar tastes. Overall, VERY happy to try this beer. It had a great mix of sweet and sour flavours, MANY thanks to Tom (CaptainCougar) for this trade way back in September 2003. I was VERY happy with Beer #1000! Finally, an update (although I've had this no fewer than 10 times since this rating back 19 years ago!), during Rating #10,000 celebration: s: vinous - tart - sweet cherries a: muddied brown - light vermillion tint - almost no head t: sweet, slightly cloying - tart & very fruity - pure cherry p: rich for alcohol content - enjoyable and reminiscent o: still amazing - bright and cherry-y - super sweet 12 ounce bottle - Hy-Vee: Madison, Wisconsin - US$8,99/four pack - purchased: 21-July-2021 - sampled again: 08-June-2023 rating for this sample: 8,3,9,3,16

Re-rate based on several bottles since my original tasting back in the early days! Repeated sips have really demonstrated how phenomenal this beer is, one of the best available malt beverages on the market. The sour cherry, oak, and sharp carbonation combine for an experience unrivaled in this style. Buy yourself a case.

Rating #300
My favorite beer at the Fort Wayne tasting. Poured cloudy orange-red-brown, with an off-white head. Three distinct aromas: cherry, cherry, and cherry. Flavor was dominated, as expected, by these very cherries, although the fruitiness was nicely balanced by cinnamon and woodiness. The palate was remarkable- this is the smoothest fruit beer (OK- I see this is a Flemish Sour...) I’ve tried, and the carbonation perfectly complemented the slightly sour, spicy flavor. Remarkable.
