The groundbreaking IPA lots of people said they had, but few actually did

No single day can contain something as momentous as our 20th anniversary here at Stone Brewing. So we’re celebrating this milestone over the course of an entire year by releasing some fan-favorite beers from our 20-year history, using their original recipes and bottle art, and looking back on some highlights from the past on our way into a future filled with continued creativity, passion and a helluva lot of fun. Join us!

Five years of progressively more aggressive hop-fueled exploration produced this precursor to Stone Ruination IPA. It originally hit palates in 2001 but still packs a wallop — loads of piney, resiny, citrusy aromatics and flavors.

Not a home run for a Stone double. A well laced white had on a clear light amber body. Nose features malt, dank and fruity hops. Hops are a nice mix of grapefruit, floral and semi-astringent earthy tones, but not as juicy and fresh as some Stone products. The malt is chewy, caramel and biscuit. A touch of pepper in there somewhere. A nice mid-density body and mid to low carbonation. Meh.

Bomber via trade in Brussels, thanks Beercation.

Thank you Sebletitje. Bomber sampled @ Sebletitje’s Farewell Tasting. Clear orange with a creamy off-white head. Nose is very mellow onion hop, pine, some biscuit malt, vague sugar even, pine oil, orange peel. Taste is easy orange peel, mandarin, very mild hay, low pine resin, easy dried mandarin peel, biscuit malt. Bit malty body-wise some mandarin peel. Very mellow by current standard, interesting to try this blast from the past. This must have been a harsh IPA back in the day, these days this barely even qualifies as an APA. Good but too mild for me, could have used more hop. Interesting look at how things used to be.

Orange with a white head. Aggressive hop profile overwhelmed the tastebuds leaving only the bitter remnants of a powerful IPA. Some sweetness in the finish. Could use a bit more finesse but it fit its era quite well.

Draft at Stone Brewing Richmond. Poured an clear amber-orange color with a small white head. Aroma was notes of pine, citrus. Light malts. Flavor was smooth, with some grassy notes. Alcohol is pretty well masked. Citrus and some grassy bitterness dominate this one. A maltier and hoppier version of their IPA.

On tap at the Red Cow North Loop. Pours a clear light orange with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of bread, grain and grass with a bit of earthy bitter citrus backing. Flavor has bitter citrus and grass up front with a grain backbone.
