Blue Monk Special Reserve 2013 is a quadruple which has been aged for 3 years in red wine barrels from Château Haut Breton Larigaudière in Margaux! It is dark brown in color with a beige frothy head. It has an aroma and bouquet of a complex red wine, with a soft taste of spice, berries and black cherries. The flavour is enriched with touches of caramel, fine chocolate, toasted nuts and soft hints of smoke. The fruity elements of red and dark fruits comes from the aging in barrels fine from Château Haut Breton Larigaudière in Margaux. These flavors are adding a slight vanilla note and some refined wood tannins.

Plum and florals. Some light barrel but well integrated. Black pour with decent head. Syrupy consistency like honey. Sweet finish. Well done. Tap at Maxs.

Draught in Chmielarnia. Black colour, almost no head, no lacing. Aroma of barrel, dried fruit - especially raisin and cherry, some red wine. Alcohol does not disturb. Lightly sour, light bitterness. Full body, not cloying. Impressive.

On tap at Ale Arsenal. Overt plum. A murky brownish with garnet highlights. Taste is uninspiring. Not much of the barrel showing at all. Meh.

Draft glass @ ’t Antwaerps Bierhuyske. Tried this one after the bottle version. Dark brown going to black (might be the lightning), basically no head. Nose is strongly oxidized, cardboard, grape jelly thick very boozy red wine. Taste is boozy very flat simple dark fruit & red grape syrup, jam, little complexity some cardboard, oxidation, syrup, raisin,… Body carries little carbonation some oxidation, syrup, red wine jam. Like this one far less than the bottled version, rather simple, strongly boozy wine syrupy variety. Back to simple alcoholic Stuise affaris, this one is agreeable enough.

On tap at In De Wildeman, Amsterdam on 18th March 2016. Sepia, almost black with thinning, tan foam. Intense roast malt aroma with spice and vanilla. Thick roast malt and earthiness in-mouth, with tart cherry. Nutty, earthy and cherry finish. Solid and a touch viscous with full body and a rich mouthfeel.

Draft @ Het Schooltje courtesy of Carlo. Shared with the UnPer100 crew.
