For those that don’t know the beer, it is our Barley Wine which we then aged in an array of Scotch Whisky barrels for over 6 months. The beer has fantastic depth and complexity from both the base beer and the whisky barrels. It is a warming, sipping beer for the end of an evening. The lyrics on the can are from a traditional song “Benny Havens, Oh”, sung by many a West Point Cadet over the years.

American style barleywine by Moor, bomber from Dranken De Moor in Haasdonk. Medium thick, stable, egg-white, creamy, irregularly lacing, very stable head over a cristal clear, beautifully coppery-amber robe, very bright and autumny, with strings of fine fizz piercing through; turns misty brownish-tinged deep orange with sediment. Intense aroma of dried orange peel, Grand Marnier, marmelade, hazelnut oil, dried grapefruit flesh, green walnuts, yellow raisins, old woolly blankets, hints of strawberry wine, liquorice, dust, honey, cognac, some vague onsetting sherry-ish oxidation. Fruity onset in a clean, rounded way, sweet candied orange and yellow raisin with a mild sourishness underneath (mandarin juice), early signs of hop bitter 'stings', medium carbonated with a rounded, smooth, vinous mouthfeel. Beautiful rounded caramelly malt middle, resiny honeyish sweetness lingering as well as these orange flavours, nutty sides, ending very bitter, DIPA-like, with a whole lot of candied orange, dried grapefruit peel, even some dried mango, firmly bittering, but still juicy, followed by a strong, heating afterglow of very cognac- and Grand Marnier-like alcohol, a tad wry in the end. Quite intense, well-crafted American style barleywine with IIPA-like characteristics, may have the potential to improve a bit with further cellaring. Among the very best Moor beers I had so far.

Bottle shared with Erwin Van Moll and Untappd-Timo "who knows Koen" @ Van Moll Brewpub. Hazy almost murky dark orange to reddish color, medium to full sized white head that lasts for a decent while. Smell and taste are weird, kinda weird anyway, old hops, dusty, definitely some barrel aging in there but it doesn’t necessarily do it any good. Meh.

Bottle shared with, and courtesy of, Rich at his Welfare Pad. Many thanks! Pours a clear deep amber, thin off-white ring. Aroma is pleasant barley wine caramel. Taste is complex dark fruits, wood, light smoke, very sweet with some syrupy vanilla. Very tasty stuff.

Draft @ Tilquin English Fest ’16 as "SWBA Benny Havens scotch whiskey), courtesy of and shared with the fine Belgian RB crew. Orangé, fin beige. Arôme au nez fruité pas mal d’effluves de barrique, fermenté et fruité avec pas mal de belles effluves de houblons pour un style anglais jeune dont les houblons restent bien présent. Palais garde une petite sensation belge dans la levure, sucre résiduel, note de barrique, whisky, fruité blanc avec un léger fini huileux houblonné. Base maltée est là assurant une certaine épaisseur de bouche.
