Black Tuesday - Madeira Barrel-Aged

This version of Black Tuesday spent 18 months developing in madeira barrels. If you've never tried madeira, it's typically sweet, fortified wine from Portugal. The barrel component is apparent as the nose is enveloped with peach notes, followed by dark roast and hints of caramel. The taste experience is similar with a semi-sweetness that highlights bright berry flavors, a strong imperial stout body, finishing with a firm tannic structure.

Thanks to Kai for the share - sweet roasted malty with intense layers of red wine, warming and boosty, cocoa, caramel, dried fruit shred, full bodied, bourbon and lots of red wine oak infused notes coming in, dark sweet warming into the close. Gorgeous.

Poured from a 2014 vintage, 750 ml bottle. Aroma is fairly malt forward with lots of roast notes and some tobacco and leather. Lighter chocolate and molasses notes. Fairly fruity with lots of Madeira notes as well as some prune, cherry and date notes. Medium light alcohol notes. Hints of oak. Pours jet black with a medium small, fairly thin, mocha head that recedes quickly to the edges and disappears. No lacing and sheets of alcohol. Flavor is very sweet with lots of chocolate, treacle, dark caramel and toffee, and quite a bit of roast. Less tobacco and leather than in the aroma but it's a bit present. Moderate bitterness and high alcohol notes. Moderately strong Madeira notes with lighter notes of dark fruit. Hints of oak. Mouthfeel is full bodied, but not pastry style with medium carbonation. Low astringency and moderately high alcohol notes. Overall, a solid beer even after all these years. The aroma is starting to show oxidation with the dark fruit, tobacco and leather, but the flavor is still very fresh. Big alcohol notes, but the big malt notes help carry it.

ore Black Tuesday! More boozyness. This one is pretty sweet, of course, and the madeira comes through nicely. Very warming and rich, maybe a tad too hot but the fruityness adds some depth. Fun to try, as most BTs.

750 ml bottle from Adamchandler! 2014 vintage. Aroma of dark chocolate, red grapes, soft oak. The flavor is a reflection of fortified wine, richer chocolate, cherry skins, oak. Alcohol is not forward but still here. I mean, fresh this would be hard to drink. At 6 years old it is now drinkable!

75CL Acquired from RS. Split 3 ways. Been holding this 2014 for WAYYY too long. Pitch black (duh). no head. the aroma is semi-bland. wine? sure, not insane woody, grape, wine. oooh wow. this is delicious. LOADS of wine, it's sweet, dessert wine, a slightly moldy barrel flavor with caramel, oily, silky smooth, THIS is a sipping beer. it's depth is great. It's everything great about BT with this refined dessert wine depth. Love it. Needs WAY more aroma.
