Very limited Valentine’s Day edition of Malheur Bière Brut, also tasted in the equally limited Delhaize edition, with a red label and named Malheur Bière Brut Special Edition (I had to go quite a long way to eventually find out this is the same beer). Creamy, nicely lacing, yellowish white, regular, stable head over a warm yellow blonde beer with vivid sparkling, almost like champagne, as is to be expected from this particular style. Sweetly perfumed aroma of ’speculoos’, honey, ripe peaches, mango, melon, vanilla, banana, gingerbread, cloves, liquorice, pineapple in syrup, aniseed, cinnamon, single malt, lemon balm, apple cake, earthy yeast, cava, orange zest and white rhum. Taste begins with a spicy, ethereal sweetness, exotic fruits including banana, elegant and smooth with a sharp, minerally, tingling, champagne-like carbonation with sourish, drying effect, nice caramelly malt sweetness, lots of perfumey spicy impressions (star aniseed, liquorice), finishing in a herbal, aromatic but not too strong hoppiness, slightly bittering but overcome by the initial sweetness and spiciness, long and dry with a warming, almost astringent, rhum- and liqueur-like alcohol effect. Great sipping beer, like most of these ’brut’ beers, but perhaps a tad too much on the gingerbread spicy side, I still like the regular version better. Nevertheless: a gracious, generous, rewarding beer. Be sure to sip this from a wine glass and serve chilled.

Bottle at RBESG ’14, day 4 not so grand tasting at Craft Clerko, 10/08/14. Hazed golden blonde with a moderate off white covering. Nose is cereals, straw, light citric notes, grain, bread dough. Taste comprises much the same, yeast esters. Medium bodied +, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a little booze. Not a lot to it tbh, a little boozey and raw.

RBESG pt 19. Craft Clerkenwell. Grandish Tasting. Lightly hazy gold beer, good fluffy white head. Palate is airy and semi dry. Fine carbonation. Sweetish malts, little creamy. Light champagne vibe. Mild citric tang underneath. Nibbly fine fine carbonation before the dry finish. Tasty.

Pours a hazy blond colour with a massive head. Aroma is sweet, malty and strangely perfumed. Flavour has some candy sweetness and that sweet perfumed feel remains. Has a slight peppery yeastiness and some warmth from the alcohol.

Bottle at RBESG 2014. It pours clear golden with a fizzy white head. The nose is roasted grain, cereal, light spice, wood and pepper. The taste is crisp, white grape, straw, cereal, gooseberry, white sugar, mild spice and alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body, effervescent carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Alright.

Champenoise plop upon opening. Good white head, stable over fully hazy, lively carbonated yellow-golden beer with a greenish sheen. Spicy nose, some citrus, pale malts, and a fine perfumey touch, difficult to name; More caramel than in the nose, sweeter, and even liquorice. Fruity notes, if less specifically citrus. Warming up, not only the liquorice becomes too intrusive, there is also an alcohol-induced sweetness, as from frangipane. Bit sticky MF, at least medium bodied, indeed Champenoise carbonation. More convincing that lots of these beery Champagne lookalikes. However, calling this one Brut is stretching truth. Demi-sec would be more appropriate. Needs to be drunk very chilled indeed.

2/II/14 - 75cl @ Brugs Bierfestival - BB: n/a (2014-163) Thanks to Erwin, PriorL and Mathieu87 for sharing today's beers!
Little hazy dark blond beer, creamy white solid head, very stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: yeasty, malts, hay, some dairy, bit grassy, hint of peaches. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet malty start, fruity, bit sugary, very yeasty, soft bitterness, fruity and sugary notes. Aftertaste: lots of yeast again, bready, sugar, bitter hops, some peaches again.

Sampled 75 cl. bottle @ Brugs Bier Festival 2014. Hazy golden, little white head. Overly sweet nose, pure white sugar, yeast, white bread dough, some grains. Bitter grains upfront, sweetness follows, white sugar, sweet yeast, lemonade, slightly herbal, white bread dough, touch grainy. Carbonation is through the roof. Meh, I adore Dark Brut but these other Champagne beers they make never did anything for me.
