This sparkling wine is the result of the partnership between Andy De Brouwer, owner and daring sommelier of the restaurant Les Éleveurs in Halle, and Vin de Liège. It is the result of a blend between a lambic beer produced in the Zenne (or Senne in French) valley by the Den Herberg brewery and the "clear wine" used to produce L'Insoumise, the crémant of Vin de Liège. Hence the name MeuZenne, the fruit of the contraction between Meuse and Zenne.

The two products are blended before bottling, in which the second fermentation is carried out (traditional method). The MeuZenne is then aged on lees for 9 months.

No head after scant seconds; clear light copperish golden beer. Liqueurish nose, vin doux, fortified wine. Buns with sugar-frangipane coating. Spiced grapes. Dry, with just a faraway acidity from the lambic. Again liqueurish flavours with almonds, sultanas, dry spices. Very liqueurish character, slick. Looking dead, but feels carbonated to a certain extent all the same. Alcohol remains seriously hidden. Special - in the sense that the lambic is certainly not dominant, which is the case in most hybrids. But is it that much better for it?

No head but small rim; finely carbonated cognac-coloured beer. Sweet vinous nose, as in vin doux , Sauternes, hint at amandine, green wood, very aromatic. More wine than beer, the lambic definitely giving in to the wine. Grapes, certain herbs, passion fruit bavarois. Some sweetness directly linked to the winealcohol, as from old barreled white wine. Absolutely Champenoise pearling. Despite ABV rather light body, spritzy. Impressive beverage, but as said, close to sparkling sweet wine, rather than to any beer.

Bottle. Batch 4, lot MEUZ20. Color: Clear pale golden, very thin white head. A lot of tiny carbonation bubbles keep coming up in the glass. Aroma: Champagne-like, fruity, funky hints. Taste: Champagne, brut, some Lambic-like tartness proves the presence of the Old Lambic. Hints of oak wood, wild yeast funk and old hop. Fruity grape and lemon. Light to moderate sweet and tart. Just below medium body, average carbonation. Nice mix.

75 bottle, courtesy of Cédric after the Gravity diner at La Tana.
Unsure this is even bottled by Den Herberg and not by Vin de Liège. Label shows no info on the latter.

75cl bottle at my 40th birthday BBQ. Pours a golden yellow, light mist, large white head that recedes, vibrant carbonation. Curious butterscotch notes swirl around an unmistakable champagne sweetness, the wild lambic bringing a lovely refined depth. More lambic presence would be nice but still very good.

3.75/5 pours clear vibrant pale blonde. High looking carbonation. Scent is raw, fruity, green apple skins. Mild on the funk. Taste is full, dry, intense, high carbonation (too high for my taste). Fairly dry. Nice enough, except for the over carbonation.

Note : this is a wine with lambic, ergo not a beer, ergo not a rating here.

28/II/20 - 75cl bottle @ bottle share after the Blind Geuze Tasting, Struise Shop (Brugge), BB: n/a, batch 2 (2020-194) Thanks to Erwin and all for sharing today’s beers!

Clear copper yellowish drink (wine/beer blend?), big fizzy aery white head, unstable, non adhesive, dissipates immediately. Aroma: chemical, nail polish remover, CO2, weird, slightly fruity. MF: very lively carbon, medium body. Taste: very funky, bitter, pretty chemical, fruity, osm epeaches, more chemical, tannins, lots of fruit skins. Aftertaste: dry, bit fruity, sourish, unpleasant chemical side flavours. Don’t like it…
