Qroontje, brewed on express demand of the largest Flemish Dentists’ association, is a Belgian wit - however, NOT in the ubiquituous Hoegaarden style, but more in the line of Leuvense Peeterman, Neeryssche Dobbel-wit or other historic wheatbeers (wit has to be translated as tarwe, wheat; not as white). The name is a reference to something dentists like to make, as to the peculiar spelling, the label says it all. 55% pilsnermalt, 35% wheat, 7% oats, 3% biscuitmalt, Spalthops. Separate fermentation Saccharomyces and Lactobacillus.

Bottle from Beer Planet. Blond, hazy, massive creamy white head. Aroma is lemon, citrus, bit herbal, bit ice creamy. Taste is interesting. Wheaty and dry, bit of creaminess again, definitely something weird there too, bit herbal, bit tea like. Very grainy. Nice bitter finish. As a De La Senne fan I think they can do nothing wrong. Unsurprisingly, I like it. --- Beer merged from original tick of Qroontje on 09 Sep 2019 at 16:06 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 9 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 8. As Wadesda #2, older bottle from Belgiuminabox; now apparently continued as Qroontje, which I haven’t seen anywhere so far. Experimental Belgian specialty grain with very thick, rocky, densely moussy, egg-white head captured after a light amount of gushing; colour is a warm, lightly orangey ’old gold’, clear with very strong sparkling, almost champagne-like, turning more sedate and misty with deposit, as expected. Somewhat unusual but not unpleasant aroma of freshly cut grass, sweet red apple, fresh banana, soap (probably the wheat), apricot, straw, dry cookies, yoghurt, dry earth, gooseberry, sourish grains (oat?) and some onsetting oxidation. Crisp, lively onset with an interesting play of sour (unripe stonefruit), sweet (hints of banana, pineapple and peach) and bitter (firm grassy hop bitterness already manifesting itself in the foreground); prickly carbo but not overdone, supple bready malt base with soapy wheat undertone, bit oily mouthfeel, hop bitterness increasing towards the end and ending bone dry, spicy, tonic water-like and herbal, deeply bittering, lending it a very quenching effect. I do not get much of the Lactobacillus here, are we sure this earlier version is also fermented with bacteria? In any case: interesting, appetizing Belgian blonde for sure, but perhaps not the best in this series. In terms of style, I would hesitate to recommend this as a witbier, considering the amount of hop bitterness, which is totally unexpected for the style. Rather a ’Belgian bitter blonde’ as there are many others nowadays following the example set by XX Bitter in the nineties, but distinguished by the grain bill and fermentation.

Bottle split at Scopey’s 5K Extravaganza of Oompah Band meets doorbell - thanks to Paul, 15/02/14. AS Wadesda #2. Lightly hazed golden orange with a moderate off white covering that retains well. Nose is tangy citrics, straw, earthy, peach, bitter orange. Taste comprises bitter fruits, orange tang, straw, scorched grass. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with lingering bitter notes. Ok stuff - Belgian Wit - really ?

Scopey 5K Tasting in deepest Croydonia. As Wadesda #2. Cheers Paul. Light haze on this burnished gold beer. Little white head. Palate is light and crispy and dry. Mild minerals. Pretty intense grapefruit bitterness along with an unsweet lactose. Light dry finish and a strong bitter linger. Bitter bastard beer.

Bottle shared at the Scopey 5K tasting - big thanks to Paul for this one. Pours clear, yellow-gold, effervescent with a frothy white head. Sugary dough in the nose with nips of cereal, puke and corn. Light sweet flavor with dry wheat, bitter hay and grains. Light bodied with average carbonation. Bitter, husky grain finish with dirty hay in the mix as well. So so. The bitterness is a bit harsh, though.

Bottle at my 5K tasting. It pours clear light amber with a thick white head. The nose is hay, toast, peppery, biscuit, orange peel and dough. The taste is doughy, hay, spice, toast, decent bitterness, biscuit and citrus peel with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not a whole lot going on, but fine anyways.

Slightly hazy golden colour, white head. Aroma of malts, hops, bread and marmelade. Bitter flavour, malts, yeast and orange zest. Bitter finish, malts, hops, bretty citrus peel, hefty carbonation. Nice, also for its age. I quite like De la Senne brews!

17/I/14 - 33cl bottle as Qroontje from Joris' stash @ home - BB: n/a (2014-58)

Clear pale orange beer, huge aery to rocky irregular white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: floral, bit spicy, soapy touch, fruity, hint of banana, some citrus, bit sweet. MF: lots of carbon, too much to be pleasant, medium to light body. Taste: surprisingly bitter start, grapefruit, citrus, very hoppy, bit spicy. Aftertaste: bitter hops, citrus, lemon peel, grapefruit, bit of medicinal bitterness. Not as bad and aged as I was afraid it would be! I guess the lambik is upholding the beer.

Bottle from Beer Planet, as Wadseda #2. Poured out with an enormous fine head, tons of carbonation rising, and a cloudy dark yellow color. Rather funky nose of wheat and grains, biscuit, bread, peach or melon, cream. Rather raspy flavor, cabbage, funk, tart weirdness, pickles. Tastes terrible. Very astringent and bitter in the finish. I guess they were trying something interesting, but this is a bit rough.
