IPA - Black / Cascadian Dark Regular

Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats.
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Thx. to Travlr for this one. 66 cl. bottle sampled @ RBBSG. Pours dark brown with a mocha head. Fruity nose with light berries blended with semi-dominating roasted malts, stronger coffee, hops are coming through lighter. Taste is thicker roasted malts, some lighter mocha and coffee sweetness, caramel, hops are not terribly strong, coming through lighter in the end, bit floral hops. m/m body, not bad.

Bottle: Very dark brown with a thick tan head. Nose is ripe with hops; citrus and florals. Light chocolate and some roast. Very nice. The flavor is hop forward with mostly florals competing with a roasty background. Citrus and cocoa are again lightly present. Very nice.

Purchased from Mondo Vino, Denver and drank in hotel room waiting for other half to get ready (02/06/12) ! Pours dark brown to black in colour with a finger of off white/tan head. Citrus hops hit the nose first off, but also a little background toastiness in the malt. Quite a malty taste to this beer for a black IPA - citrus comes through also, fairly well balanced, perhaps a touch too much of the malt. Mild carbonation with a fairly slick finish. Decent black/cascadian IPA.

Shaker pint draft at Waldo Pizza in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is black dark brown with a smallish tan head. The aroma is citrus and pine hops, along with a light roast and toast malt. Very much a fresh and alive nose. The taste is the pine hops initially, mixed nicely with pineapple fruit , then transitions well to the dry roast malt along with some mineral behind. The aftertaste has a touch of grass dryness. The palate is medium to light bodied, nice active carbonation and a dry clean finish. Nice expression of the style. Deschutes is one of a small handful of breweries I just trust.

Great floral aroma with fruit and light roast in support. Black with barely noticeable deep red highlights. Creamy deep tan head with large bubbles. Initial flavor of floral is overtaken mid palate by ash roast. Very dry, puckering finish. Chewy bread dough mouthfeel. Bitterness very present on the last half.
