Our emblematic gnome rambles across the mountains in all seasons, summer and winter alike. With his stick and his mammoth waistcoat, he regularly climbs the 6666 meters up Mt CHOUFFE, to breathe in the fresh air of the perpetually snow-covered peaks.
Once he reaches the summit, he likes to pour himself a Chouffe and admire the view.
"Grouff, grouff ?" an inquisitive, shaggy-haired yeti, recognising the sound of beer being poured, approached timidly. "Chouffe ! ... not Grouff !" Marcel told him. The white landscape inspired Marcel to call his new beer, which is so refreshing, smooth and spicy: Chouffe Blanche!

Bottle. Cloudy orange with an inch of white head that fades slowly. Aroma of sweet orange pudding, some lemon, spices. Sweet but the citrus sharpens into a tangy spicy and reasonably bitter) finish. A little more depth and body than your normal wit (then again it is 6.5%) but crucially is still refreshing.

0.33 l bottle from 'Drinks & Gifts', best before July 2021. Hazy, golden with a thin, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, quite spicy, moderately fruity-floral and a little yeasty aroma of coriander, chamomile and a touch of banana. Slightly sweet, moderately bitter, gently spicy, slightly fruity-floral taste of coriander, chamomile, light grains, some banana and hints of lemon peel, followed by a short, slightly bitter, quite spicy and a little yeasty finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Really pleasant Wit, classic and nicely balanced.

330ml bottle @home. Giallo paglierino, torbida, schiuma bianca abbondante, mediamente persistente. Al naso citronella, scorza di limone, coriandolo. In bocca è fresca, ben bilanciata, con finale leggermente acidulo. Corpo medio-leggero, carbonazione media. Buona.

opalescent pale yellow colour, one inch of dense white head; aroma of coriander, lemon zest, lemongrass, citric acidy and wet wheaty notes; taste has the same notes with less sourness as expected based on the aroma; good one

Moortgat competing with its own Vedett Extra White – Achouffe was taken over by Moortgat in 2008 – with this ‘ardennais’ gnome version, launched recently. Thick and foamy, beaten egg-white, pillowy, plastery lacing head, initially clear warm ‘old gold’ robe with light apricot tinge, misty with sediment – but not that typical ‘wit’ look. Aroma of very strong coriander (the one scent that is noticeable from half a yard distance), banana milkshake, orangewater, freshly whipped cream, white bread dough, plaster, moist white pepper, ripe pear, potato soup, slight background DMS. Sweet onset strongly dominated by heavy banana ester, next to subtler hints of pear and pineapple, medium carbonated with a clear wheat-soapy feel; residual sweetness lingers over this soapy and soft-bready middle phase, turning a tad glueish towards the end, when this overdose of coriander seed sets in. There is a candied lemon-like effect which is supposed to represent the citrus peel aspect of classic witbier spicing, but no true citric ‘fraîcheur’; clove-like phenols and very mild floral hops are added as well but soapiness and banana ester keep dominating. Witbier is perhaps not my favourite style to begin with, but I can appreciate a well-made one very now and then; this, however, feels industrial, overly sweet and heavily overcoriandered even for the style that basically thrives on it – with a severe lack of citrus peel crispness that could have brought some balance otherwise. One for the ignorant masses that love the old gnome from the Ardennes, I guess, but not one for me.

A golden beer, a head quite small and white. Aroma has wheat, coriander, spicyness, some lemon. Taste has strong spicyness, lightness of wheat, coriander, quite dry finish with strong spicyness of pepper. Medium bodied. Powerful and spicy wit, I like this.
