'Bestefar' is the Norwegian word for Grandfather. In this case, it refers to the father of Father Christmas, or 'Nissefar' as he is known in Norway. Bestefar is the perfect companion for a cold winter night spent contemplatively in front of a fire or for those fire-side moments that are a bit more 'festive'. It is complex, a little bit wild...and it might just be the best by far!

A dark brown ale with a thick creamy mocha head. In aroma, loads of dark malt with grassy and peaty notes, dark fruits, & alcohol warmth. In mouth, a sweet molasse fruity malt, wood extract, peaty and warming alcohol.

50cl bottle. Batch 493. Dark brown colour almost black with a light tan head, light creamy, good duration. Aroma is roasty, light licorice and spicy. Herbal notes in the mouth, spicy, toasty, sweet and brown sugar notes. The final has toffee notes, sweet and light bitterness with a very good balanced. Medium to high body.

Aroma malt, karamell, røyk, noe lakris. Utseende mørk brun nesten sort med lys beige skum. Smak malt, røyk, karamell, lakris og kaffe. En smaksrik juleøl med fin fylde og litt julesteming.

Bottle, batch 447. Pours a nice black, with a creamy, coloured finger thick head. Exceptional and complex aroma with burned malts and coffee, lots of dark fruit and raisins and sweetness from kandi and molasses as well as nice spicy notes. Body is creamy, with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet with coffee liquorice, kandi and molasses, as well as lots of dark fruits giving a fantastic and everlastingly heavy finish. Tremendous!

Bottle: Poured a dark clear brown color ale with a large foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry fruits with some light residual sugar notes is quite nice. Taste is a nice mix between some dry fruits with some residual sugar notes and some caramel and light toffee notes. Light chocolate notes could also be detected. Body was about average with good carbonation and well hidden alcohol. Well made and quite enjoyable beer for those colder winter days.

Bottle. Dark brown with a small tan head. A lot of spices like clove, aniseed and mint. Also malt, some nuts, licorice and some light notes of smoke. An interesting and rather complex beer. I liked this one!

Re-rating, this years bottle (2012) @ home. Black body with a fine brown head. Strong aroma of dark malt, smoke, dry fruit, caramel and chocolate. Flavor is sweet and malty, smoke, chocolate, coffee, dry fruit and a fine bitterness to make a balance. Warming alcohol. Fine body and god aftertaste. A nice sipper that I find better than previous rated as a matured version.

500 ml bottle @ Patricks. Bottle date August 2010. Almost black body with a big, but fast disappearing brown head. Aroma of dark malt, chocolate, dry fruit, leather and liquorices. Flavor is sweet, sweet malt, dry fruit, burnt sugar, sweet & salt liquorices and hint of warming alcohol. Full body and a sweet, liquoriced aftertaste. Looks good, nice aroma and promising in flavor, but probably meant to be chaired by many. Half a bottle is just too much for me, at least in the beginning of the evening. Probably rather impressive in smaller amount and by the end of the drinking session, but right now it feels too much like sweet and alt liquid liquorices.

Pour is a pitch black with a large tan creamy head. Aroma is a big black licorice with some smoke maybe? Flavor is again a black licorice, anise and some more wood smoke. Finish leaves a nice roasted smoky malt on the tounge. This was very tasty. The kind of beer that shows something new as it gets warmer.
