Bouteille. [notes 2006]

Golden-amber. Thick head. Caramel with lightly crackery notes. Honeyish backdrop. Overall, a fairly boring beer, where the honey note is the only thing even remotely fun.

Originally rated July 2006. Bought in singles at La Trappe À Fromage in Gatineau, Quebec. This latest Unibroue pours a clear golden-amber colour with a small head, but decent lacing all around. Bubble coming up fast, from 4-5 different spots in the bottom of the glass. Mild herbal aromas with a touch of bread and grain. First sip was a turn-off with some metallic notes. Then it disappeared. Light sweetness from the honey with some grain malt taste. Never thought Sleeman would continue the U series, but this one is not bad. Actually, better than the other two... I find.

Fresh 2006 bottle, mostly drainpoured on 8/27/06.
Feeble white head lounges about precariously at cover, with lots of fizziness in the liquid, which is a very weak amber, more golden-like and starkly clear and filtered.
Smells papery, prematurely oxidized and pasteurized? I don’t know, it certainly dosent smell fresh and yeasty. Metallic character is definitely there, with short lager time evident (vanillin, corn). Some honey fermentation biproduct (sharp, waxy candy corn and spicy phenol) is notable, with no hops, and an insipidly simple caramel-honey sweetness.
As disappointing as the aroma is, the flavor takes it another level. Papery, dry, poorly extracted/undermalted or just plain pasteurized and stale (or both). Metallic to the extreme, with compound lagering flaws. Sweet, candy-like, artificial caramel flavor is present on the end. No alcohol noted, fizzy, annoying carbonation and some minor wateriness. Even some DMS thrown in for good measure.
Now let me go see which Sleeman beer I should alias this to.....

Brown bottle, 341 ml, purchased on July 2 2006; eye: amber with honey reflections, nice tan head, light effervescence; nose: hops, herbal, malt, sweetness of 7-UP; mouth: honey right at the start followed by quite a fall in taste to the malt, honey finale, mildly sweet, really lightly bitter, light body, carbonated; overall: not that great but definitely not that bad FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 341 ml, acheté le 2 juillet 2006; oeil : ambré avec des reflets miel, belle mousse tan, légère effervescence; nez : houblon, herbacée, malt, sucré de 7-UP; bouche : miel en attaque, puis chute vers le malt, finale mielleuse, moyennement sucrée, très légèrement amère, corps léger, plutôt mince, carbonatée; en résumé : pas terrible mais pas si pire que ça

Bottle: Poured a dark clear amber color lager with a small bubbly white head with no retention. Aroma of corn with some sweet malt is pretty gross. Taste is bland, boring and inoffensive. Wow, can’t believe Unibroue is now producing boring sweet corn adjunct lager now.
