Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours opaque jet black with a dense thick tan head - a looker for sure! The aroma is rich roasted malt, bitter - sweet, sticky, plenty of chocolate, dark and a touch of milk chocolate, oily, jammy fruits, pink marshmallow, rocky road, orangey, melon, plum and some umami. The taste is initially dry, bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, charred, peppery spice, umami, liquorice, salted caramel, dark chocolate, coffee grounds, rocky road, zesty orange, tangerine, tannin, stone fruit element/melon? and a hint of alcohol to bring it together. Fulsome body and moderate carbonation. Flavorful and Robust. A lovely thing.

Opaque black brown beer, good tan head. Airy smooth palate, but slightly thin and fairly dry. Decent fine carbonation. Rich but thin dark malts. Good oaty bitterish dark chocolate that is redolent of these Kernel IDPs. Not sure the hop mix makes huge amounts of difference in this style but here there is a pleasant citrus, floral and well rounded. I want to say Melon but I suspect that is my head playing tricks because the label says Huell Melon. Not sure that hop is strong enough to assert itself over this dark malt base. Finishes smooth and semi dry with a light touch of Ekuanot candy. Nice. Typical Kernel drinkability.

13/II/21 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: 22/X/21, bottled: 22/X/20 (2021-126)

Clear black beer, big brown creamy bit irregular head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: good roast, some soy sauce, quite some citrus, fresh orange peel, grapefruit, caramel, tropical fruits, bit of a sweet impression, more roast. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sweet, malty, good roast, some alcohol, caramel, pretty bitter, dark chocolate notes, some coffee, slightly sweet. Aftertaste: dry, hoppy, some citrus, fruity touch, more roast, bitter hops, more chocolate notes.

Appearance is black, with a 2-3 finger thick mocha head. Aroma is chocolate, toffee, toasty malt, coffee, milk chocolate, hints of dark fruit. Taste is chocolate and coffee, alongside fruity hops, chocolate milkshake, caramel, bitter hops in the finish. Full and smooth mouthfeel. Really good stuff.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from All Good Beer. Pours black with a big, dense, frothy beige head. Extraordinary stuff, gorgeous dark chocolate, strong ashy roast, baking cocoa, burnt grass, earth, nips of grapefruit, tobacco. Medium to full bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Lightly warming finish, lots of bittersweet dark chocolate, ashy roast, background citrusy hop impressions, burnt pine and grass. Some lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Aside from Kernel, I don’t think there’s another brewery in the UK, if not the world, making a beer quite like this.

330ml bottle SophiesBeerStore.co.uk. Pours dark with a large tan head. Aroma has wondrous ashy pine and coal-darkened malts. Taste builds on this, with good roasted coffee and subtle chocolate with a nice hop presence, bringing to mind the classic Kernel India Porters of yore. Excellent.

Bottle. Beer Stop, Dronfield. Nearly black. Super dense and creamy, lasting, slightly leggy, glossy tan head. Looks fantastic. Nose has full roast coffee. Dark chocolate. Some vinous notes. Big, leafy hop behind all that. Taste has a moderate sweetness, turning full on, roast malt, leafy hop bitter. Smooth and pretty full mouthfeel. Fine carbonation. Bitterness on the finish lingers for an age. So tasty!
