St Austell’s most legendary ale! Hicks is fullbodied strong and Cornish, brimming with a kaleidoscope of flavours.
Brewed with plenty of malt and lashings of English Fuggles and Golding hops, Hicks is truly a classic ale of considerable depth and complexity. The real ale alternative to a well rounded premium red wine and simply superb with steaks and other red meat dishes.

Bottle. Nose is malt, citrus, Taste is toffee, lemon pith, slightly medicinal hop. This was superb on draft but feels very muted in the bottle.

A really good ESB with deep and rich malt and a great balance of bitter hops.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from Waitrose. Pours clear, deep copper with a small, creamy off-white head. Medium sweet flavour with rich malty character, a little British yeast, caramel, berries, mild earthy-leafy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Luscious toasted malt character, more caramel, bitter earth, faint pine. Delightful ale!

Cask at Roebuck, Burton on Trent – at 5%. Pours a bright reddish brown with a small off-white head and good lacing. There’s a vaguely fruity aroma but nothing major. In the mouth, it has a creamy texture with flavour of autumn fruits (mushy ortting apples mainly – but in a good way). There’s traditional hops in the mix as well. It gets hoppier the more you taste it – leading to a bitter finish. This is quite nice.

Rocky light brown left a creamy cover on a chestnut coloured body. Malt, spiced fruits & bitter aroma. Medium bodied, lively on the tongue with a cloying back. Spiced, berries, toffee & lightly hopped tastes with a bitter finish. That's a great pint.

Bottle from Purely Cornish, Looe. Very dark clear amber with a small head. Very strong tasting, its alcohol content is very noticeable, however there's a nice traditional English malty bitterness to it as well.
