Deep red with a beige head that settle to a cm. Aroma of cherry vinegar, bracken, dry soil, red wine, some herbs. Texture is surprisingly creamy with moderate sourness and acidity edging out after a time. It’s not fizzy but it’s a long way from flat. Lots of woody notes - fresh oak, twigs, stemmy herbs. Berry-fruity red fruit and some caramel, earth. After thinking the fruit had pretty much disappeared on first taste it emerges and creeps up towards the finish. And the soil note in the aroma seems to dissipate after a time too. I liked it much more that the first sniff and sip suggested - the balance worked really well and there’s a great deal going on. But it didn’t quite cohere for me - felt like I wanted a little more of a bottom note to anchor things.

Bottle at Leighton’s 20K tasting, thanks to Daniel. It pours clear deep reddish - amber with a tiny bubbly white head. The aroma is sweet, funky, tangy, vanilla, wood, dirt, leather, custard, dried red berry and toasty earth. The taste is soft, sweet, sour, tangy, funky, red grape, vinous, limited acidity, fruit compote, brown bread and a touch of green apple. Medium body and low carbonation. Sticky mouth - feel. Condition ruins a little. A touch too flat. Interesting anyhow.

Leighton’s 20K at his posh new gaff! Thanks to Dan for this one. Clear amber beer, bubbly pale tan head. Palate is airy and has modest fine carbonation. Vinegary red wine. Acetic acid. Some red berries. Light semi dry finish. Would be okay on me chips if no real vinegar was available.

Light sweet flavour with sturdy acetic bite, tart berries, wood, berries. Medium bodied, oily and soft. Warming finish with more acetic burn, berries, leather, earth. Great stuff.

375ml bottle shared. Very excited to find an old bottle of this at the Lumsden, and pretty reasonably priced considering the age. Huge aroma with a bunch of sultanas, cinnamon spiciness, sherry, tartness, cherries and altogether fantastic. Flavour is dried fruit, red wine vinegar, spice, cherries, sultanas. Big tartness, big sweet fruitiness. This is just huge flavour, and there’s still all manner of stuff I couldn’t pick out. Hugely complex and crazy delicious.

375ml bottle. Cloudy dark amber colour with small, micropored, creamy, fully lasting, beige head. "Rumtopf" aroma, notes alcohol soaked dried fruit, raisin, sultanine, some chocolate, a spicy touch of blue cheese, an alcoholic whiff. All flavours are reproduced in taste, warming alcoholic finish.
