500 ml capped bottle, from Vaaland, Bryne. ABV is 4.2%, Black colour, moderate beige head. Aroma of lightly roasted malts, some sourish notes, hints of dirty washcloth. Smooth mouthfeel, fairly decent for its low ABV. The flavour is better than the aroma, well balanced notes of roast malts, mild coffee, dark chocolate and moderate bittering hops. Might well buy again.

Bavarian stout - a concept that would have been unthinkable had it not been for the global craft beer movement, sweeping across Europe in the past two decades. Germany showed up relatively late and hesitating on the craft beer scene, but has produced technically perfect stouts, IPAs and other decidedly non-German beers since then (apart from the renewal of inherently German styles of course) so I had to taste this when I saw it on the shelves of Dranken Geers in Oostakker near Ghent. Initially thick and frothy, dense, creamy, pale beige, plaster-like lacing, gradually opening and eventually completely vanishing head on a very dark chocolate brown beer - as good as black, but with a burgundy hue round the edges. Aroma of burnt toast, coffee grounds (stronger when warming up), bitter black chocolate, coffee cream, wood ashes, liquorice, praliné, gravel, petrichor, deep-fried parsley, crumbling dried mud, black pepper, vague wet concrete, old mace and leather. Clean, crisp onset, lively carbonated with souring and prickly effect, low in esters (if any) despite a faraway hint at dried blackberries, moving straight on to a smooth, remarkably full (for ABV), even almost creamy body composed of layers of unsugared black chocolate, some dry caramel and charred toast. Well-developed backbone of bittersweetness with more bitterness than sweetness, but nowhere harsh, instead remaining very supple, balanced and easily drinkable, with a pronounced minerality running underneath (wet blue limestone, petrichor) and something vaguely leathery. Hints of nutmeg, liquorice and parsley show up very faintly, probably coming from the hops in this case, which provide a deep, late and leafy bitter element that goes well with the roasted aspects of the malts. This roasty plus hoppy bitterness does not, however, become all-immersive: a sweeter, softer, creamier, almost nutty and caramelly aspect runs underneath and makes sure that overall balance and drinkability are retained. Something very faintly earthy lurks at the back but the whole thing remains clean, smooth and supple, with no great ambitions at complexity or 'difficultness' for its own sake: instead, this German stout maintains a very 'Irish' character, almost like a Bavarian interpretation of Beamish dry stout - roasty, but creamy and soft, with a strong underlying minerality to it. Uncomplicated, in all, but all the more delicious in contrast with all those overly elaborate strong stouts we have endured in the past few decades. Feels very Irish and in that sense very successful, but the German aspect of it lies in its devised simplicity, with the Reinheitsgebot in the background; this is a classic dry stout at its most effective, a basic interpretation as it were, but completely to the point in a lovely old school way. Given its low ABV combined with its fullness of flavour, I could drink this one by the gallon. Less is more, as the great German architect Mies van der Rohe said.
