Dull tan. No head. This has a fairly phenolic aroma - the rye might do that - with light cheesy elements. Fizzy. It's tart, with some orangey fruit notes, but it's off. There's something not right here, seems mainly phenolic. I don't know if the age didn't work out, or if it just was off in the first place, but this is not right.

Bottle split at Matteo's farewell bash, CBC Islington, from a trade in the US 20/02/17. Hazed golden orange with a big old off white head. Nose is tarte orange, funk, barnyard, pissy citrics, damp hay, spice. Taste comprises oaky wood must, fruit balsams, soured stewed fruits, lemon peel, vinegar strokes, hay bale, funk. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close with a big puckering acidic bite. A touch too bracing ... needs calming down a touch to provide some balance.

Matteo’s Ciao @ Craft Islington. Thanks to Colin. Cloudy gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is light and dry with decent fine carbonation. Airy fluffy malts, light creamy sweetness. Very sour fruits. Lemon sherbet. Red wine berries. Light finish. Nicely complex sour but could not drink loads, it’s a bit sharp.

Bottle shared in London / thanks to Colin. Pours lightly hazy yellow-gold with a small, bubbly white head. The nose smacks of strong lemony acidity, pale wood, grapefruit. Light sweet flavour with sharp, sharp acidity, a little ketchup, lemon juice, pale woody dryness, wheat flakes, straw. Light bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with more sharp citric bite, strong acidity, some citrus peel, more hay, light minerality. As with many De Gardes, it’s pretty harsh. Enjoyable in small doses. In larger doses, your esophagus will suffer.
