Good old-school impy stout, toothy dark roast, dry and ashy roast, bit of booze, baking cocoa, a bit of torched wood, earth. Wouldn’t say I get a lot of bourbon but maybe a little burnt caramel and vanilla. Dangerously drinkable.

330ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo - cheers Graham!]. Opaque, darkest brown colour with late awakening, small, creamy, diminishing, minimally lacing, tan head. Roasty, chocolately, dark malty, slightly woody and yeasty spicy, minimally vinous fruity aroma, notes of dark chocolate, dry cocoa, some oak, a touch of dark and burnt caramel, red wine, black cherry, whiffs of black pepper. Taste is roasty and chocolately, dark malty, slightly caramel malty, slightly vinous fruity, minimally woody, notes of dark chocolate, dark caramel, some toffee, oak, a touch of blue grapes and black cherry, a minimally alcoholic touch as well, subtle residual sweetness, very mild roasty and hoppy bitterness; lingering, minimally warming, alcoholic finish. Oily texture, smooth, soft, silky, minimally cloying palate, fine, dense, soft, creamy carbonation. Rich and complex, simultaneously mild and mellow, almost a bit cautious - pretty good, not outstanding.

Bottle. Black with a scant coat of tan head. Aroma of Welsh cakes, some fudge, that de Struise foil thing, moderate roast, caramel. Very low carbonation. Heavier roast than suggested by the aroma with blackberry reduction, Welsh cake, spices. Fairly strong bitterness. No overt alcohol - dangerously swiggable really. Good.

Bottle, 13%. Roasted, sweetish. Black colour. Small head. The flavour is roasted. Quite dry, but the mouthfeel tells me there is some sugar in there. Dry liquorice. Medium high bitterness.

Bottle. Pours cloudy very dark brown with airy light tan head. Clear aroma of barrel, malt, and fruit, with touches of roast. Bitter, roasty flavour with notes of malt and yeast, and touches of fruit and barrel. Bitter, roasty aftertaste with malty and estery touches. Strong but nice.

Struise and a barrel aged imperial stout, should be a good combination thanks to the Struise beer shop delivery several months back. My large, New Belgium globe glass is ready to receive and I see a black liquid with brown showing at the edges. The head, what there is of one, is a tan oval around the glass. The smell, well, it is good. Berries, chocolate and alcohol. And now I have a drink, even better than the scent. It tastes of a combo of imperial stout and belgian ale. Dark fruit, grain, bakers chocolate, caramel, roasted malts, strawberries, leather and whiskey. Superb.

Bottle from Raynville Superstore. It pours opaque, black with a decent light tan head. The aroma is rich sweet, slick, roasted malt, deep chocolate flavour, gateaux, vanilla cake frosting, bourbon, nuttiness, coffee, mocha and neopolitan ice cream. The taste is slick, oily, toothy, chewy, slick, bitter - sweet, vanilla cake frosting, decadent chocolate cake, toffee, bourbon, warming alcohol, some dried fruits, nip of spice, charred oak and a splash of cola with a toasty, cacao finish. Fulsome body and fine+ carbonation. Flavourful, rounded and moreish. A classy Imperial stout and what Struise do best.

12 June 2022. Bottle from Beers@Moviefun. Bottled: 25/06/2021.
Cloudy black, lasting, thin, beige head. Aroma of chocolate sauce, espresso, prune, ripe brambleberry, pear, charred meat, burnt coconut flakes, earth, vague soy, bourbon, wet wood, aceton. Taste has sweet prune & date and vague sourish brambleberry in a thick chocolatey & fudge-like malt body next to bitter coffee & pure fondant; something meaty-umami and leathery in the back. Peppery hoppy finish with dried fruits, wood, fondant, tobacco and boozy bourbon alcohol, yet never sharp per se. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Not as elegant as Cuvée Delphine or not even as 'full' as the Black Albert base beer, but the bourbon barrel component is added in a balanced and structured way. So all in all another delight in this series.
