Dark, smooth, delicious. Aromas of worn leather and cool autumn nights. Notes of sweet plum and toasted raisin, hints of coffee and cacao. Lingering tart and refreshing finish. Only available for a few short months. Not to be missed!

Black beer but with some mahogany reflections, dark-beige head with a near black-green lustre; not large, but very dense. Typical stout nose, with dark grains and malts, more than explicit saison spiciness. Sourish, as in dark stout-like acidity from roasted barley, superposed on a more sweetish malt background. More farmyard flavours remain tantalizingly hidden behind the roastiness. Surprisingly full mouthfeel for such a light beer. An extremely interesting extrapolation of the Saison theme - I don’t find much Saison left, but get a beer, interesting in its own right - respect!

Medium beige head. Lovely reddish brown body with light carbonation. Vinegary sugary fruity aroma with licorice and barnyard notes. Dry-acidic watery barnyard and pepper taste with wooden notes. Thin body. Harshish mouthfeel. Dry watery cedar wood aftertaste with metallic notes. Too thin and watery for me. (0.75l bottle at Olympen, Oslo.)

1 pt. 9.4 fl. oz. bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar , Stavanger. ABV not mentioned on the label. Chestnut coloured beer, big off-white head. Moderate aroma of Belgian ale yeast, hints of brown bread and spices. Fairly light bodied, easy drinking and refreshing. The flavour has some citric acidity, moderate malts, fairly dry, very moderate hops. Okay, but not exceptional.

I have had this beer numerous times since it has come out. I think I even have the first batch tucked away somewhere. This rating is for batch 262, 263 and despite Jolly Pumpkin removing their bottle log I believe this is over 2 years old through other ratings. The cap pops and the foam of the beer slowly creeps up the neck. The beer obviously pours with a large, thick, off white head that just grows inside my glass. Super sticky and can never fade away. The color of the beer is almost black but its really just a very dark brown, there is a bit of a reddish hue in the color as well.
What I like about the beer:
The low alcohol yet so much beer.
Most of the regular JP funk is there but it seems the age has turned the brett into cherry-pie-filling .
No dark and roast malt flavors mixed with lactic qualities, which is not my thing.
What can be improved: Just seems a bit empty at the end of the flavor, the flavor is a bit striped.
Overall: I like the quaffable aspect, love the brett complexity as it has aged but needs other characteristics from the base Saison (pre-bugs).
750mL capped bottle in a long stemmed Cantillon red-wine-type glass.

On tap at Slow’s Bar-B-Q. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is slightly sweet apple with caramel hints. Flavor is apple, bubblegum, cloves, with funky flavors I generally associate with tart and sour ales, but no sign of sourness. Quite a contradictory beer, with a flavor that doesn’t match its appearance and flavor notes that suggest sourness where there is none. Quite interesting.

13th April 2008 Dark beer with lightly toated and a nice sourness that reminded me of Duchesse Du Bourgogne. The marriage of the two works well.

Location: 750 ml bottle from State Line, 8/26/09, Batch 340/341

Aroma: Smell is sour grapes, cherry, wine-like qualities, some oak/woodiness
Appearance: Dark brown color, slight red hue, foamy tan head
Flavor: Definitely on the tart side, a bit of sour funk, a bit of lemon, some spice, some caramel malts
Palate: Decent mouthfeel, fizzy,
Overall Impression: My first Jolly Pumpkin beer. This beer was alright, has some pretty interesting farmhouse, wine-like, and sour flavors. An interesting take on this style, and a nice beer, I'm glad I tried this one.
