Nomi Hodaï is a collab made with our beloved friends of Oxbow Brewing Company from Maine (USA). The main strengths of this excellent brewery are their farmhouse ales and thirst-quenching beers. The Nomi Hodaï is for sure one of the latter. What makes her exceptional, is that she not only contains barley malt, but also rice – a first for our brewery. Luckily we could count on the expertise of Oxbow in the use of this ingredient. She turned out to be a blond beer of 4.5% alcohol, with a discretely present bitterness. The rice brings a certain lightness to the beer and has a dry finale, which makes her all the more drinkable. She has been dry-hopped with a mix of old and new varieties, that have the characteristics of noble hops. These hops bring refreshing floral and herbal touches, combined with a fruitiness that reminds us of strawberries and peach. What more could you ask for to kick off the summer?
The name Nomi Hodaï is an expression that can be heard in certain Japanese bars, that have an “all-you-can-drink”-formula for a fixed fee. The reference to this country - with a culture that is highly loved by both breweries (Tim from Oxbow even lived here for a while) - points out again how incredibly drinkable this thirst-quenching beer is. But be aware, even the Nomi Hodaï should be drunk in moderation.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy yellow color ale with a large size foamy head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of light cereal and malt notes with some dry hops notes. Taste is also a mix of light cereal notes with some dry hoppy notes and sharp dry finale. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Not bad but the rice malt seemed to diminish flavors and complexity.

Licht troebel geel bier met schuim. Smaak is bitter hoppig en kruidig met een mix tussen Saison en IPA. Tonen van citrus en wat bitter hooi/gras. OK.

Very pale yellow colour with lasting thin head. This is a bit like a hoppy lager. Light citrus hop notes. Cereal and toasted white bread too.

Bottled May 10, 2022, drunk 1/13/23. Clear, pale-blonde-hay. Large, well-retained, white head. Lovely house saison yeast in the nose smells like most of their table saisons. Tons of mineral, chalk, plaster, light lemon and hints of black pepper. This smells just as good as the first day I found Taras Boulba (though less hoppy than that one). Clean, mineral-rich, well-hopped but still leaning in to the yeast, with various interesting grain notes and not really much sense of the rice in the nose. Lemony acidity perks up on top of cracker and perhaps rice-like nuttiness/biscuity character. But there's ample softness and maltiness, as well, with high attenuation. Creamy at times, with tight carbonation. Tons of mineral and plaster-like character with soft, herbal hops yielding pleasing, balancing bitterness. Soft, malty, yet bright and with all the hype that is this brewery's yeast at its best. Really, really nice to have this. Been so long since I've had a new and great DLS beer. Maybe something lile Dupont Avril compares closest to this (though this has less yeast phenol than that one)?

330 ml bottle, bottled 10 May 22. Dark yellow, hazy body, with a big, frothy, rocky, white head. Aroma of grass, herbs, pine, citrus, dough, some stone fruits. Tastes quite similar, with more stone fruits and sweet berries. Medium, a bit oily mouthfeel, with a lively carbonation. Finishes crisp, medium bitter, moderate dry, citric, floral, a bit herbal, moderate sweet fruity, with quite long-lasting pine. Very fresh to drink, quite light bodied, but still with a lot going on. Lovely combination of spicy hops, sweet fruits and just enough smooth malt body. Score: 7 / 4 / 7 / 4 / 16
