This full-bodied imperial stout pours an opaque mahogany color with a tan head. Its smell is dominated by notes of roasted coffee beans, with a slight hint of chocolate, but Simcoe and Fuggles hops add complexity to the aroma. The roasted barley is detectable in the taste, and this complements the bitterness from the Warrior hops - balancing out the sweetness from the load of malts used in brewing Peg Leg. A creamy mouthfeel makes this a smooth, utterly drinkable beer.

Cask, 8%. Black colour, seems clear. Very small tan head. Spicy aftertaste, some cinnamon. Coffee, toffee and roast barley. Interesting, but not for too long.

Deep dark black, quick head faded to none. Nose is molasses and coffee with a little roast and maybe some dark chocolate. Flavor starts with a caramel sweet malt that trends into a dry roastiness with hints of chocolate but then theres a bit citric and floral resiny hop hit . Carbonic bite contributes to a sense of astringency, but otherwise a fairly smooth mouthfeel. Lingering black malt pucker and some hop bitterness.

Quite heavy in alcohol flavor, despite the stylistically-low 8% ABV. Pours a dark brown, not black, and the nose is more like figs and raisins than the roasty goodness I’ve come to expect from Impy Stouts. The taste is thin and fleeting, starting out with dried fruit but never developing the wanted chocolate or coffee notes. In fact, the alcohol heat stands out the most, never good in a big beer. The feel is spiky and cheap, making Peg Leg nigh undrinkable when it warms. Ugh. (2009)

12oz bottle. Opaque black with a thick, rusty, beige head. Sweet and sugary, certainly has some Milk Stout characteristics. Slightly pungent chocolate tones, some coffee, a touch of dark fruit. Not really true to style, the Imperial moniker should be dropped. A pretty solid stout, a little too sugary and strong to session, but too one dimensional to really be a great sipper. OK.

Picked this up on a trip to South Carolina. (local World Market) Pored into a perfect pint glass. Very dark or pitch black. Nose is all chocolate and a touch of roasted coffee and sweet malt. Full bodied. Lots of cream and chocolate on the palate. Very smooth. Kind of tastes like chocolate milk. Very easy drinker. Well done stout.

Bottle from Bruisin ales. Pours black with a 3 finger foamy tan head. Smells creamy and burnt malt. Chocolate notes. Full bodied with foamy carbonation. Flavor is smooth burnt malt with some milky chocolate. It’s also a tad chalky. Very tasty. Tending more towards a sweet stout than a harsh imperial. Or not. It’s really very tasty. And that mild milk chocolate is kicky. Very nice.

Tap at Pony Bar. Pours a dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Light, roasted malt aroma with hints of sweet, dark fruits and mocha. Flavor is nice. Rich chocolate notes, mild burnt malts, and some fruitiness. Lightly bitter on the finish. Pretty solid all around. Not super-potent like a lot of imperial stouts, which some people might like and others not.

A deep dark stout with a thick moka head. In aroma, pleasant and pungeant, bitter chocolate, herbs, floral hops, organics, soy sauce, brine. In mouth, a nice smooth imperial stout with bitter chocolate, soy sauce, plums, light peatyness, very nice and smooth. Bottle shared with Probstk, Nov. 26 2009.
